Ok, anyone have experience with this? I see lot of 455, but I really want a street car first, something quick second. That said I also have to be able to pass Illinois emissions, at least on the tailpipe/dyno mutant thing.

Any brilliant suggestions what I should be looking for?

Well...the emissions thing always sucks. But you can get it to run clean with cats on it I suppose. Otherwise the Buick 350 is a good swap. Use the V-6 motor mounts and the V-6 bracketry. Starters and waterpumps interchange as well. You'll need a V-8 rad and you'll want V-8 front coil springs for the load. The throttle cable will reach, as will the wiring. But the wires will be tight. Otherwise, its pretty straight forward. When you get a 350, give us a yell and we will get you going in the right direction. Good luck!

Ah emissions. Lean the hell outta your carb, advance the timing until it barely runs and then take `er in. Passes fine.

Thats how I get my 455 to pass emmissions. I lean it out and retard the timing until it will just barely start, and I mean JUST barely hehe. Runs as smooth as can be and it passes with loads of room to spare. Thats with an 850 Holley DP on it. I'm sure it would pass that much easier with a Q-Jet. :bglasses:

Hey mark, congrats on your first post. I'm from Skokie, and I passed in Chicago Monday of last week with a warmed over 455 in a '79 regal. Don't worry about the car not passing, I put a set of 2.5 cats on my duel exhaust and I didn't have to tune out anything, it comes out clean as a cleans as can be. I've got a decked block a ta113 cam, and 10-1ish pistons in it, on a stock quadrajet with essentially all the emissions stuff removed, no egr, nothing. The cats are an easy solution in my book, and they really don't kill power at all. I got both of my cats off of Ebay for under 100 bucks. Just do it, make the world a cleaner place.
