Swap in a 350 4bb or keep the 300?

I cant find any after market parts for the 300 in my 65. As most car enthusiast do, I love to mod my cars. I am struggling whether to keep my 300 and pay much more for parts and not have enough of them any way, or drop in a 70 or 71 350 with a 4 barrel and have a much easier time. Im a big fan of small blocks and dont really want to go big block in this car. What does everyone think?

You need to use the Search function for "300" on this board and on the BCA Site, www.buickclub.org. You will get many previous threads about what can be done with the 300 engine.

After, you've digested all those postings, and still want to replace your 300, then the Buick 350 makes the most sense. Remember that today's fuels will ping in the 1970 high compression 350. A 1972 or later engine had lower compression.

Well, I think that 1970 engine had 10.25:1 CR which is what I have in my 340.

After I put in 16 gallons of 93 octane, I have to fill another 4 gallons of 110 racing fuel to try to control the pinging.

According to my factory service manual, the octane requirement (in today's terms) would be about 97.

Other 340 owners have told me they have to use racing fuel also.

    So, just be prepared.

I run a 70 350 and run 91 octane just fine on the cooler days (below 90), above that I need either a can of octane booster or a few gallons of race fuel

My 300 thats in the car is running fine on sunoco 94. Maybe when it gets hotter that will change. Anyone use xylene as an octane booster? Its cheap at the hardware store and its something like 120 octane. Dont 300s have 10.25:1 compression as well?

    The four-barrel 1964 300 had 11.0:1 CR.

    The 1965 4-bbl was (I think) 10.25:1.

    The 64-65 2-bbl 300's were 9.0:1 CR.

    The 1966-67 300's had the 2-bbl and 9.0:1 CR.

The Wildcat 310 came with 9.0:1 CR.

Xylene or Toluene works great as octane booster!!! Don't use it in any more than a 30% mix to gas...IOW, 3 gals of Xylene to 7 gals of pump gas = 10 gals mixed...It will get you right at about 100 oct if you mix 3 gals of Xylene to 7 gals of 93 oct pump gas...

It's also cheaper if you buy it in 5 gal buckets...I just bought 5 gals for about $23...I've also known of a few local guys that buy it by the 55 gal drum... :eek2:

to answer the original question, do you want a cherry stocker or something with a little get-up. nothing beats cu.in. and with a change to a 350 you wont have to change the front springs, and i think the motor mounts are over the counter. of course you might want to change the tranny too, and that is a different matter. i believe there is some surgery to stick in a th350 or 200. by the way, you can use any 350, not just a 70 or 71. you can modifiy to get as high a compression as you want with a little head work, the proper pistons, and a good cam.

I want a car I can drive and enjoy, not sit and look at. I plan on putting a 200 4r from and 84 GN in it, And painting it either orange or green. It was cream colored when new. I dont really care about numbers matching or "correct" stuff, I want to enjoy the car.

i have gone through this with almost all of the cars i've owned. especially with the older ones i kinda feel the obligation to restore vs. restifiying or all out custom. one reason is the over-all value of the car at resale time. i will eventually get tired of the car i am playing with and want to move on to something else. and the best way to afford a new toy is to get a good price for tha last one i had. and most people will pay more for a stocker or near stocker / easily returned to stock than they will for one that has been cut up and modified beyond that. the best thing i can tell you is to hang on to every part you take out in case you get a perfectionest who doesnt like your mods. i wish i could of hung on to every car i ever had, but i would have a football field full of half done cars ':beer'

Both the TH350 and the 200-4R are bolt-in jobs for your car.

Getting the kickdown linkages right is a main concern for transplanting those transmissions.

I have a 1970 350 2bbl that I let you have cheap. It has 9:1 compresssion I believe. Will need a distributor. Don't have a 4bbl manifold but do have a quadrajet laying around that I'll throw in. I am in Ephrata, PA

To learn about the linkages, go to www.google.com and search under "200-4R TV cable" to get several hits about the topic.

    My Buick's 200-4R came from a 1986 Oldsmobile.

harry [yellowlark], there is a guy in the bca forum asking about doing a frame replacement on a 70 skylark. it seems to be the concensus that he just get a competent welder to fix his problem of a broken frame just behind the motor mounts. you have done a frame-off, maybe you could give him some advice on the work involved. if you are interested.

The linkage from the '65 ST300 will work with the 200R4. Check out the feature from HotRod magazine about two years ago... they did a piece on the 200R4 into a '67 300/ST300 Skylark.

TV cable kits are available. See http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com

I used a chevy TV cable bracket on my 300... I bought it from a local speed shop. Bolts right to the intake where the old kickdown bracket used to be... The cable runs acoss the motor (behilnd the intake)... Here is a pic of my linkage I've already posted here. Let me know if you want more pics....
    Hope this helps

    Rtabish,

My floor and trunk pans were rusted away, so the body had to come off the frame to get at those areas. My frame was never damaged or rusted, so I can't offer him advice on that kind of work.
