I found a 10 bolt rear end out of a 69 chevelle. I want to put into my 65 skylark which is getting a heart transplant with a 67 gs 340 motor. is this the best idea for the price if i build it right

I think only swapping in a chevy engine is a sin. Swap rear ends all day long.:TU:

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

Use the 71-2 Cutlass/Skylark 8.5"....more parts, better prices

The 69 chevelle axle will be .5" wider on each side than the 65 axle. It should be an 8.2" unit. Is it a posi axle?

If you need to rebuild the axle or convert a non posi to a posi, then the 8.5" rear is a little cheaper to go through. The 8.5" rears are also the .5" wider on each side.

the 8.2 chevy also is a weaker rear than what you got in it

I see "BOP" used alot when talking about rears, what does it mean/stand for?

Buick, Olds, Pontiac. During these years they had bolt in axels and no C clips like the Chevys had. Stronger design.

That's what I though but I had nothing to base it on other than a gut feeling. Thanks

Years ago I put a '69 Chevelle SS 12 bolt posi in my '64 Skylark and it was a mistake because it was wider than the '64 unit. I had to jack the car way up to clear the tires and it looked stupid. Of course that was the "look" in the late 1970s so it fit the era.

Coil spring mounts are different between 65 and 69. You will either have to use 67-up springs, or cut/weld/modify the spring mounts on the 69 rear.

Width is very likely to be the same between 65 Buick and 69 Chev. Measure them to be sure.
I have a 64 Cutlass rear that is one inch narrower than the 65-66 Buick rear....maybe the 64 Buick was narrower too?

Like the others said, the 71-72 Buick-Olds rear is a better, stronger rear.

I love the bolt in axels! They are stronger. But being able to pull a rear out by just pulling the axels and not having to touch the pan is awesome. Dangle the brakes/lines/backing plates from the chassis and swap in a donor in a very short time without touching gear oil or brake fluid. I hate c clips.

Talk to Jim Mitschke of JD Race in Richfield, OH (Monzaz on this forum). He's the muscle car rearend guru- he has lots of cores and can build whatever you need.
He's very good and very reasonable. 330-990-8155.
    I got a BOP 10 Bolt, 8.5 w/3:42 gears from him for my 68 GS 400.

My 65 El Camino had a single leg 2:73 12 bolt from the factory and about 10 years I swapped it with a buick buddy and got his 70 3:42 or 3:64 10 bolt out of his GS.

he really wanted a 12 bolt for a future build and I wanted lower gears and posi....

    we both made out....

68-70 Buick Skylark /GS (US built) rears are 8.2 inch; 71-72 are 8.5 inch. 68-72 are same width hub to hub; Some Canadian built Skylarks MAY have 12 bolt rear. 64-67 are slightly different width.

1" smaller width I believe overall. Mounting locations are the same. Not sure about U joints.
