I have installed a new 1" sway bar in the rear. The factory bar in the front is a 7/8". Is there a formula for sizing the front to the rear bar? The car handles well but still feels a little mushy in the corners, not like the marshmellow ride I had before without a rear bar. Ken
Generally the front sway bar should be bigger than the rear. You will find that your car is now 'tail happy', especially if you have a lot of horsepower. Try and locate a 79-81 Trans Am front bar(1.25 in) which will give you a better handling bias. Put new harder bushings in the frame brackets and links to stiffen it up. I hope you boxed the rear control arms when you added the rear bar. If not, you will crack the contol arms at some point. Something else to consider is a quick ratio steering box. The difference will be dramatic. John C
Thanks for the info John. I did notice the car went a little more sideways as the tires broke loose. I installed a boxed tube set of lower control arms. I will locate a larger bar for the front. Ken
John - Do you happen to know if any of the third gen F-body sway bars will fit? There is a late 80's WS6 sway bar & steering box up at the yard I've got my eye on. :TU:
Off hand, I don't think so. Take a tape measure and measure the distance between the frame mounts, and the distance between the link holes, and how far back they go frome the frame mount. Then compare it to your own. I don't think the steering box will work either. John C
Like 12 or 22 years ago ( I do not remember which white, 69 GS I did this with) I got a 1.25 bar off of a Firebird at the local pick-your-part. It bolted right on.
