I am considering switching over to an electric fuel pump on the Buick, since the mechanical dual action pump is on the expensive side. However, I have some questions for those that have done it. I am worried about the constant pressure of the electric pump drowning the carburetor, since the mechanical pump would vary with engine speed. Is this a problem that is typically encountered? I would be running a fuel pump meant for a carbed engine, so I would think it would be okay, but I am wondering if running an electric pump also means I need to run a return line to the gas tank, or if I can get away with the existing fuel line setup. Also, where did you mount your fuel pumps, for those that have done it? I'm not too worried about losing the vacuum pump; I don't intend to keep the vacuum wipers and most of the other vacuum accessories are long gone from this car. Anyway, just looking for tips/suggestions from those that may have done it. Thanks!
My 69 Riviera came from the factory with an electric fuel pump located in the tank. Works pretty good for the street.
As long as you select the proper pump, it wont drown the carb and you wont have to run a return line. As far as mounting the pump, most people mount it close to the tank on the frame rail. The electric pumps work better as pushers rather than pullers. The closer to the tank the better. I dont have time now but I will post a link to a nice electric pump later on today. Good luck!
Well, after some frustrating discovery, I learned that my mechanical fuel pump works fine - the carburetor needle valves were plugged with crud. But thanks for the suggestions, and if anyone needs a nearly new electric fuel pump, send me an email. :af:
