Finally got my car to the drag strip. It was my first experience & it was a blast. First run was really poor! 15.006 :Dou: :boring: Friends I was with quickly coached me. :Smarty: Changed one the weights in the Dist. & ran a 13.968 on the 3rd pass. Changed metoring rods in the secondaries, advanced timing, and ran best time of 13.428.
Still have some issues. One is I was running street tires and couldn't keep from loseing traction. :3gears: Second, we couldn't get timing where we wanted. :puzzled: So now I'm going to take distributor out and have it recurved. Any suggestions on dist or carb. (quadrajet)?
Change distributor, more carb work, and different set of tires and we're off to try again. Going to let friend run it too. I know he can get more out of it than I can! :Brow:

    Congratulations! Glad you had fun.
Cutting off 1.5 seconds during your first session is quite an accomplishment.

What were the MPHs to go along with those ETs? It's hard to compare ETs on street tires. Each run you're either spinning them or babying it so they don't spin ......

That's exactly what I found! Either smoked them, or, hit it then eased off then mashed it. Almost imposible to be consistant!
    Speed was 103.04

Looks like you're having fun! Set your timing with a dial back timing light at about 37 degrees total (plug your vac advance while you're racing). Should be somewhere about 18 initial at 1200 idle speed, then recheck to make sure it's all in by 2500. If you drive it on the street or run straight pump gas, you may want to detune it after you're done racing. If you still have the orig compression ratio, mix about 50-50 94 unleaded with Torco or Turbo Blue leaded racing fuel (110 octane). That'll let you dial in all that timing without fear of spark knock.

The secondary air door tension (wrap) is really critical, especially on your big torque big block car. You may have to play with it a little to get the balance between your driving style, a bog when it hooks, and up in smoke when it doesn't. Very hard to drive it when it's too loose, and losing et when it's too tight. Touchy adjustment, don't move it too much at a time. Set the idle speed up to 1000 or so in drive so you have a good preload on the suspension and tires when you launch from an idle. Doubtful you can bring it up too far on the convertor by brake torquing it. Assuming you have a stock convertor.

BTW, looks like you're having fun from that second pic. That's what it's all about. :bglasses: :bglasses: :beer :beer :) :)

Thanks Dave. I'll deffinetly try that. Having some problems with the dist.. If we get 36 degrees total, it comes in at about 23 at initial. Makes it hard to start. Going to try and get dist recurved this week. Hope to take it to Union Grove (Greatlakes Dragway) the 24th. Batchlers party that day from 3:00 to midnight. Suppose to have some 7 second cars there. Should be a lot of fun.
I did change torque convertor. I believe it's a 2400. Going to put a drive shaft loop on to be safe. Can't wait to go again. :)

Guys this car is a true show piece. I saw it in Denver at the OCA Nationals and again in Cinncy Dale wouldn't sell it to me then and he sure as hell won't now as he is having a ball with the car. He has had more than this SX conv. ( red one ) . Very sweet car and the right color. John

Wait'll he finds out how much the resto on his GSX is gonna cost! He might be willing to liquidate this thing then

    Dale:

Be careful of having your distributor recurved. It's really hard to find anybody who can do it right any more. You might be better off working on it yourself in the car with a dialback light. It sounds like you need a smaller limiter bushing to allow more mechanical advance, or else your speings are so stiff that the mechanical is not coming in all the way.

They're having RSD (Real Street Drags) on the 24th, I'm planning on bringing the GS down on the Polyglasses to beat up in the little import boys. If you go look me up, I'll help anyway I can.......

We put in the lightest springs we had with us and it helped. Haven't tried the smaller limiter bushings though. My dist hasn't been touched for 35 years. What could they hurt? :Do No:

Keith; I'll watch for you. I could use just about any help. My friend has a set of stickys he said I could bolt on. Going to try that too. Sounds like it's going to be a good time!

If you're setting it up for racing, you can always put a kill switch from the ignition source to the coil to keep it from firing during cranking. Get it spinning, then flip the switch. Hide it and it becomes a theft deterrent.

We kept going lighter with the advance springs in the Ramrod a few years back, abd ended up with the lightest one we could find and only ran one of them. Still that way today. All the timing is in by 2500. Probably not the best setup for street use, but.........there's cruising, and there's racing.

When's the last time you smiled like that pic of yours here at a cruise?

    I rest my case.

John I would pay him enough for the car to restore his GSX to a concours class car with flynbuick as a reference .

    Keith;
Were you at the RSD on the 24th? Sure was a crappy day. :ball: Anyways, are you going on the 15th? :TU: That's the rain date they set up. I'm planning on goig again. Will try to look you up if you are. What will you be driving?

The one on the 24th was called because of weather. I'm planning on the 15th. The Chicago GS Club is having a dyno day the same day in Joliet, I might go there first then head back up RSD so I don't know what time I'll be there. I'm sure I'll have the only Black 70 GS there with Polyglasses on it... ...I've got a orange Excursion with flames as a tow vehicle...

Went to Great Lakes Dragway (Union Grove) yesterday to run my 70 SXW32 conv. Had fun, but it sure was no day for test and tune!!!!!!! :( They said there was five hundred cars showed up! :eek2: Real street drags and fun day. Three lanes of cars running for the fun. I only got to run 4 times all day! Best time was a 13.139 @ 104 on STREET tires! 1st run was a 13.313, 2nd was 13.147. Couldn't wait to bolt on a set of stickies! :Brow: Did so, and just blew the 4th run! 14.00! Did everything wrong! :Dou: Wanted a second chance sooooo bad, but they close the track to fun runs for the RDS cars. It was over for me. :af: I know I could have gotten it into the 12's! :spank: I guess it will have to be next time.

Did get to meet Keith Egan and see his 70! Didn't get a lot of time to talk though. Nice guy! Nice car! There was another black 70 GS there. Girl was running it. Don't know what she did for time. They weren't posting.
    Oh well, next time! :ball:
