Just curious what type of oil you other folks are running in your Buick mototrs . I recently purchased some Royal Purple and have heard nothing but good things about it. Anyone else using this? Also purchased AC Delco oil filter as I have heard nothing but BAD things about Frams filter  Any input would be appreciated.:pp

Don, what is the stock # for the K&N oil filter? It seems like the ones I find are not made for the Buick 350 . They don't seem to cross reference the #'s for Fram or AC Delco:Do No: Jeff

when it comes to synthetics, the best in the buisness is Redline oil i think the web address is http://www.redlineoil.com . they have synthetics for just about every lube in your car. I still use petroleum based oil or a part synthetic for motor oil due to cost issues of changing it 4 times per year.

and if you want to run a few degrees cooler, checkout the waterwetter stuff, works great.

use the synthetics only if u have rebuilt/new your engine & have installed new quality seals & gaskets . donot use in an older motor/car as u will probably have more leaks than u can shake a stick at .
otherwise, synthetics are great. i actually use castrol 10w40 in my 350 gs .

I use Amsoil 0w30 with a Fram HP series filter. The HP is their race filter and it has a MUCH better design than the regular Fram filters. The HP-2 is the one for the Buick. TA performance uses the Amsoil and they have really good luck with it as do I. As far as synthetic leaking more????? I don't know where that myth started, but an oil leak is an oil leak, either you have them or you don't.

The one thing I look for in an oil filter is cold oil pressure. Is it on the relief or not. With the HP Fram, my car will idle 45 psi cold and 25 psi hot which is really good. The oil filter is the biggest restriction in the oiling system, that's why cheap filters will show 75 psi cold or more-------they just won't flow any oil. When the oil warms up it flows more freely and the pressure comes down. The K&N filter has very similar specs to the HP Fram, I've never actually tried one though. I'm sure that they are just fine.

    K&N filter

    Jeff,

The K&N filter number I use is an HP-2003 purchased from Advance A.P. It costs around $10. It has a nut welded to the end for easy removal, thick metal case (hard to dent or burst), and 20 micron filtration if I remember correctly. Prior to the K&N I used a hastings densite filter ~$5 part # T222. I have no complaints about either filter but the oil stays clearer longer with the K&N.

i will never use a FRAM oil filter again ...
i had an old lesabre that i had put a chevy 327/700r4 in. the motor was pushin 200,000 miles so i dint expect it to sound perfect .... it had several ticking lifters and would easily float out when pushed to a very high rpm. i went to a friend's house one day and he was in his driveway as i pulled up. all of the ticking and clattering prompted him to say "sounds like another staisfied FRAM customer"
i asked him what he meant and he asked me if i used fram oil filters. i said yes.
so he has me hop in his car and we headed to the autoparts store. he has me buy an AC Delco oil filter and a quart of oil. we get to his house and i fill the filter with oil and replace the fram one with the AC Delco.
i reached in and hit the key and couldnt believe my ears. i only had one lifter making noise. on the way home i decided to push the old motor real hard... it would run a much higher rpm before floating out ..... i was amazed ... i drove the motor another 3 years before putting the car in the field due to rust.
    never another fram.
i use mobil one in my cars and acdelco filters.

if you have boat trailers or a 4WD that gets to do serious muddin ...... amzoil grease in the wheel bearings is awsome.

Once again I state, FRAM HP SERIES. These filters are nothing like the cheap POS filters that you can buy at wal-mart and fleet-farm. They have a burst-strength of 500 psi, they flow over 25 gpm, and they filter to 20 micron. Not to coarse, but not so fine as to restrict flow either.

The AC Delco filters are good, but they flow nothing like a good race filter does. Like I asked before, what's the difference between your cold oil pressure and your hot ? I know that some of this comes from the aluminum oil pump housing expanding, but most of it comes from your filter as it is the single biggest restriction in your oiling system. Think of it this way, your oil pump (not your engine) would be happiest with no oil filter to restrict it at all ! The only thing the filter is for is to keep dirt out of your bearings so why impede the oil pump any more than you have to ? They say not to run the HV/HP oil pumps in the Buick because of the load that the oil pump places on the front cam bearing. What about the load the stock pump places on the bearing when it's trying to push cold oil through a restrictive filter?

The other good filters out there are the K&N which is a little finer than the Fram HP but dosen't flow as well and the WIX race filters. These flow awesome, but they are too coarse of a filter for street use and require weekly oil changes even on race cars.

The Fram HP's and the K&N's are price competitive so I use the Fram filters because they flow a little better.

AC Delco Oil filter, and Valvoline 20w-50 ......... Been using it for 20 years and never had any oil related problems in a Buick. The car only sees 60* or warmer weather though, and alot of cruising traffic

I run Mobil 1 5w-30 or 10w-30 and a K&N filter, I run the high pressure pump and like Mark said I use these because of good flow when cold and hot......

the whole synthetic leak thing i think had less to do with synthetic leaking more and more to do with the price of whats leaking out

    Yes sir, I agree HO

I will be using AMSOIL and the 536#'s of magnet force filtermag. From what I have read, the AMSOIL has the most desirable properties recommended by that chemical engineering professor.:TU:

I run Valvoline 20-50 and Purolator, Wix or whatever non-fram filter is available. I used to run fram ph11 because it is much longer than the normal ph25. It was specified for early 70's jeeps running the 231 V6. Then i noticed that my oil pressure took a long time to come up when starting the car. I replaced the oil and it fixed the problem. It was probably the cheap anti-drain back valve used in Frams.

Well it's been a month or so now since I switched to the Royal Purple and here are some things I have taken note of : #1) NO extra oil leaking out .Anywhere.And this is on a 1 Year old set of gaskets. #2) Engine starts easier than it ever has and power seemed to increase gradually over the first few weeks of running it.Engine is not gummed at all(before or after adding oil) #3) Oil color on dipstick is same as the day it was changed,(and this is my daily driver mind you) #4) With changing to Royal Purple and changing from the Fram fliter to an AC Delco unit there is virtually no"tick" at engine start-up any more and runs so much smoother.Final Thought: I like !:TU:
