Any one run this cam ? Are there advantages to a straight pattern compared to ones that aren't straight.? Im interested because I just bought one, Im hoping this will satisfy my need for more power.....
I have stg2 se heads, spherical dish pistons, crower sportsman rods, TA roller rockers 1.6, edelbrok b4b , shorty headers, ta 3in exaughst, and a rochester 4mv .

Sure Anson, have used that 290H cam a few times, and it's better suited to your STG 2 heads than the STG 1 stuff.

It offers better idle quality and off idle performance than the 08H version of that cam, due to it's reduced overlap, and the compromises in power are lessened due to your STG 2 head exhaust flow.

Allrite man, Jim. Tks for that tid bit. I previously had the 292-02H cam. That like most cams had a longer exh. Duration. Are u meaning the exh port, and lack of dogleg on stg2 head have flow action that make up for that lack of duration. What kind of hp increase over my previous cam could I expect. That would be an in general guestamation. Being many other differences in parts. Also have u been able to try or evaluate beehive springs yet now that TA valves use Chevy style keepers, or are they called locks. I remember a few yrs ago you couldn't comment on that but were interested in it.

Jim built me one of his 470 engines with the 290H, TA Stg 1 heads bowl blended and flowing what the original iron Stg 2 heads flowed, SP1 intake, shorty headers, TA roller rockers. Using his Holley 1000cfm it made 570 HP @ 5800 and 579 lbs ft TQ @ 4600. I love this cam ! Sounds awesome, throttle response is instantaneous and idles at 850 rpm in gear with plenty of vacuum for the brakes. I am running a complete 3" exhaust also. I run this in my 1985 Regal in front of a 200-4R trans, 9" Ford differential Detroit locker 3.89 ratio, Hoosier quick times 275-60-15. Car weighs 3460 with full tank of gas. Engine can do 6000 rpm easy and pulls like a freight train the entire quarter mile. You will be more than pleased with this cam choice ! I did have to grow a new pair of balls to keep my foot in it though. Be prepared !!!
