TA (Maybe Poston) BBB Headers Obstruct Column Shifter?

So, my buddy that had the Doug headers that wouldn't fit his AC on the right side, swapped for my TA/Poston headers. They went on fine, bolted up to the heads and fit the frame really well.

However, when he tried to shift it into drive, the linkage hits the header a little past neutral.

I don't have the back drive hooked up on my car but I have the parts. When I inserted the transmission rod into the shift bracket, it clears the MT repro header by more than enough. If the frame pivot piece were installed, it would work fine.

Does anyone see anything wrong with this setup? We both have BBB, 200-4R transmissions with nothing out of the ordinary in that respect.

Does anyone know if the TA or Poston headers had a problem with column shift?

One more picture, the header in chrome is what we installed.

A column shift automatic and a console-shift automatic uses the exact same linkage pieces that connect from the bottom of the column to the transmission.

Exactly. That's what I'm trying to get my head around. The back drive for a console is the same as column shift with the exception of the console lug on a console transmission lever.

We are going to try my back drive transmission arm to see if he has one from something else.

Here’s my car with Mickey Thompson headers doesn’t even come close to the header. DEFB28A7-3631-4EC0-B461-A9C9CBB209BA.jpeg E4861CDF-93AE-4AA2-8094-E43A3C6B9612.jpeg

    Hey Greg,
I’ve got that combination (TA headers, 455 and 2004r) and I haven’t had an issue. Mine has probably an 1/8” + clearance from the adjustment bolt to the header in 1st.

Good deal. I think he measured his shift arm and it is at least an inch and a half shorter than mine. It barely engages the frame-side bracket and the spring isn't very compressed.

Thanks for the confirmation. Now we know it is not the headers.

If you need correct backdrive linkage,or just that horizontal rod,I have it.

I ran postons on my column shift with no issue, ran ta stage1 and stage2 headers in the same car no issues there at all.......now if you cross member is an aftermarket unit and sits the tranny lower, or a different mount that sits it lower it could effect it

We are going to try mine. If it works, what do you need for your horizontal rod? That is probably all we need. It can wait until the GS Nats if mine works. I've not had my backdrive linkage installed for 40 years since 70 has the neutral/reverse switch in the console.

Are you coming to the GS Nats? Since I live in BG, it would be both convenient and I'm in no hurry to put it on my car.

I'm not in a hurry. If someone is coming this way, I'd appreciate it.
