I got a used th350 from a 74 skylark. once I got my engine running I was able to get it to go in drive and reverse but the idle was alittle low. So now I got the engine at a good idle speed and everything sounds good but now the I can only go in reverse I can shift into drive and 2nd and nothing when I do shift into 1st you can here it engage but the can does not go. Am I just missing some simple coinnection or is it shot?

Really hard to tell...what does the fluid look like? I assume it's full when warm and running, and hopefully not burned.

it does look pretty dirty I was going to change the fluid. But I did make sure it was full when it warmed up. I put it in drive and checked it.

Sounds like your forward clutch pack is gone, 1st gear. Rebuild time.

I'm not sure, but shouldn't you check it in "park"? I forget...but it should be stamped into the dipstick.

I'd change the fluid and filter, then see what's up.

One thing to think about, is that dropping the pan to change the fluid doesn't get it all, there's still a couple of quarts in the converter. Some shops can hook up a fluching machine and really clean out the trans insides while they flush/replace all of the fluid. BG Products has a really good process , and you can find a shop that does their stuff on their website, www.bgprod.com.

    Hope this helps!

And make SURE it's good and warm and BE PATIENT.
