I was wondering if someone can help me. My son has a 71 Skylark and he got a 4 door parts car which I robbed the turbo 350 out of and I took it apart and put a b&M shift kit in it. I did the street/strip and I'm pretty sure I did it right, the instructions were pretty explanatory, and the guy said it worked before, so anyways I put it in my 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass because it had a 2 speed jetaway (piece of junk) Anyways now the dumb thing won't work. It has enough fluid in it. If I shut the car off for 5 Minutes it will work it will go in all gears for about a minute or two but then doesn't move in any gear. I don't have the kickdown cable hooked up and also there is a electrical plug in on the side by where you hook the transmission cooler lines, that isn't hooked up either, what is that for?
Well if anyone has any suggestions for me I would greatly appreciate it! It just doesn't make any sense why it wil go forward and reverse but after a couple of minutes it won't do anything:Dou:

    Thanks,
    Todd

the electric plug should be a lockup switch for a locking converter on a TH350C unless I am mistaken.

Is it possible the fluid in the trans is getting Aerated ie foamed with bubbles?

This would reduce the effectiveness of any hydraulic circuit (think brakes)

If I remember correctly, an over-full condition can cause this as well as an under-fill.

How many Quarts are in the trans? I believe it should take around 11 from completely dry to full, including converter

No, I ended up adding 9 1/2 Quarts the shop manual said it held 10 quarts when empty or 20 Pints, it's on full and isn't foamy. I borrowed my mechanic friends shop and lift and he is baffled too. He said he can rebuild them in his sleep and he has never seen one that worked fine for a couple minutes and then just up and quit all together, I mean you leave it off for 5 minutes and then it will work again for a couple minutes. It had been a long day, he came by after I had put it all in and was having the problems, he said we'll have to take the pan off and see what is going on there, but I was hoping I didn't have to waste all that new tranny fluid to do it, I was hoping someone here had the magical answer for me hahaha

I believe this is correct as well. Did you use the correct (TH-350C) shift kit? Is the torque converter the TH350C one, or the regular TH350 one? I think if either of these are incorrect that the trans won't work properly.

When you go to buy one they all use the same kit, Chevy and BOP 68-81

Shouldn't have been a 350C in a '71 Skylark. Should be the switch for the spark advance. Either way, it shouldn't affect trans operation if it is disconnected.

Those are transpak, not shift improver kits, when I went to B&M website all they have is one

    sooo how do I tell what Tranny I have? it came out of a 71 Skylark 4 door, it's a th350 i don't know if it's a c or not

Don't know if this helps, but when I installed the kit the first time in my TH350, I installed the pressure regulator spring backwards in the valve body. You could move the shifter from park through low with the engine at any speed, and nothing would happen at all- no go!

Not sure if that's your problem, but if it's a lack of line pressure, you might want to check that out.

TH-350C came out in '80-'86 and uses a torque converter clutch. IIRC should have a 4 pin square weather pack style plug on the left side of the trans.

The lock up connector should be on the driver's side of the trans.

    TH350C....

The TCS switch (for controlling spark advance) should be on the passenger side of the trans. It came in various shapes and configurations, depending on the application....

Allright so today we took the pan and valve body off and the pan was dirty again, I'm assuming it was the fluid from the torque converter or the cooler because I had put in 9 1/2 quarts, it only holds 10 quarts, anyways found a piece of old gasket about 1"X 1 1/2" must have been plugging it somewhat, I guess when I was scraping of the old one some got lodges in there, wierd, Well now it works except it doesn't shift very hard in the 1 to 2 gear any idea's why? It just shifts like a normal transmission 1-2

also it isn't a th350c but where would I hook up that electrical connection to? Do I even need it?

Are you sure that was a piece of gasket, or rather a piece of a disintgrated friction disc? Still have it to post a photo?

Regarding the TCS pressure switch, leave it in place and ignore it. It's not anything necessary for you at all.

yea it totally was a piece of the old gasket, The old gasket was so stuck to it it was crazy, it drives fine now but just doesn't have that snappy shift in the 1-2? Does that spring behind the vacuum modulater have anything to do with that? or maybe the vacuum modulator is bad? Or a vacuum leak? Anyone?

did the kit have you pull out the 1-2 accumulator spring?
