Hi all you guys here! I think I have a problem with a tranny converter. Engine idles good, recently has been rebuilt and today I set timing and dwell right. But when I put it in gear the engine immediately stops, reverse and drive. If I put it in gear at higher rpm than the rear wheel slips :3gears: and again engine stops running. Can anybody :Smarty: tell me what causes this problem?

Just new to this forum but am learning a lot every time I roam around here! Great site! :beer

Forgot to add the tranny code, its not the original but a '78 AC coded tranny

Sounds like your converter is bad.

Hi Larry, I tried to get more into all the info you have posted on this site about timing a 455. Hope I did it right. Its a stock 73 455 with stock cam and stock rochester. When timing I put a second timing mark at 1.3/4 inch clockwise and unplugged vaccuum hose. Revved up and watched the second mark, it didnt go upward anymore after about 2500-2800 rpm, at that point I set the second mark at 0 degrees. Drove the car and it pulled good and had no problems with the tranny. It did pull better with the aircleaner off(also stock). After driving for 10 miles and stopped it wouldn't take any gear anymore and the engine ran like it had more work keeping it idling. After an hour I tried again and all was fine again and I could drive it. Any idea whats wrong? Can I do something else to get a better diagnose? Love to read all your postings!! :TU:

    CIT Poweraddict, help me

I had a similar problem, all I had to do was advance timing to cure it.
Are you sure the marks on your balancer are right ?
Try advance your timing to where the car barely starts, if that doesn't help I'll say convertor or trans problem.

I don't think it's a converter problem........once I had a Chrysler that did that and it was a broken vacuum hose that would only open up when the car was in gear.........very strange. Check everything else first, it could even be electrical.......but I've only heard of lockup converters doing that and I don't think 78 Buicks had them yet. :bglasses:

Thanks guys! Think I had the timing right, will try to adjust agin to get it better and hopefully it'll go in gear. Will also check all vaccuum hoses. Again thanks a lot for the help!! :Comp: Will get going with it thursday.

    Menno,
You can go a little higher with the timing. Right now you are at 30*, try 32, or 34. Also, 73 engines may have EGR. Has it been removed, and did you plug all passages if you removed it. I would put a vacuum gauge on the engine. A stock cam should idle in neutral at 20" or so. You may have a vacuum leak somewhere.
