Could anyone tell me if a 70 riv has a short or long tail on the th400 ,I've got a line on one but the guy selling it is not sure,Thanks ,Greg
Yep, it should be a shorty, but it will never hurt to measure the total lenght :TU: Click here :Smarty:
Not to through a wrench in it BUT the last th400 that I pulled out of a 70 Riv had a 9 inch tail shaft. It was the medium length th400. I believe the short shaft is 4", I know the medium is 9 and the long tail is 12 or 13. Sorry to add to the confusion, I also know that on 2 69 Rivs that I pulled had the 9inch shaft on it vs the long.
I guess I need to measure it.This is going in a 66 lark GS,so I am sure I will need the 4 inch tail. Hope it is the right one ,its a fresh rebuild at the right price! Thanks again.
According to all the literature and the 64-70 Rivieras I have worked on over the years, the trans is supposed to be a short tail model BT unit. The tail housing uses the smaller bushing and seal that earlier Buick trans' had. I have 3 70 Riv trans' in my work shed now and they all have short tailshafts and small diameter housings. The 71+ Boat tail Riviera, however, began using the 9" long tailshaft used by the full size Buick since 69 Am not saying that you couldn't find a Riviera that someone managed to put a 9" tail unit. The only reason I can think of that being done is to get rid of the double constant velocity driveshaft that was used in the Riviera. It is doubtful they came from the factory that way. But who knows. Just check the trans length when you get it. My 2 cents worth, Mark
You're probably right who know what you get in a yard, all I remember it was a few yrs ago and I could of sworn the 69's that I pulled were the same length, but that was a long time ago.
