Just wanted to say thank you again for all your info and help.
Marco for steering me to Jim and Jim for all the thoughts & ideas. Now all I have to do is try to remember and translate to the engine builder.

I just have to ask builder to pressure check the heads & why it's burning qt of oil evey 200 mi. see if there is a problem with fit of intake, heads & block.

    Is that all I need?

It was good talking with you Greg. I hope you get to resolve your oil-burning issue. I knew Jim could point you in the right direction.

Just in case anyone else has any ideas, here's Greg's original email to me...

    Hey Greg,

May or may not be the same, but my 66 401 did the same thing---and I never did find out why it did it--- but after it overheated I found the reason why all the smoke-- it toasted my valve seals. Put new ones on and it quit smoking and everything began to act as it should. Hope your problem isn't severe!!!

took engine to builder yesterday. he will take apart saturday and said he would call so I can see. I hope he does.
He looked at my plugs and said it's probably rings since carbon build up on rim of plug. I've attached pictures of my plugs. What ya think Jim or anyone else?

P.S. How do I get a picture by my name?

Yes I got it . So you are having Mike C do the tear down ? Mike will undoubtably find the problem . Sounds to me like a broken oil ring or missaligned oil scraper rings . I took apart a 15k mile 455 Pontiac that was smoking . Every ring gap was lined up . OOOOOPS ! Seems like a place like AMT would stand behind their work better . I do have a story about their work . Seems a buddy went there for a 440 HP rebuild . WHen we installed the engine we had water leaking on the pass side . They tell us you didnt use enough sealer on the hedder bolts . So we remove those 2 1/8 hedders and redo that . Still leaking . Doug states you guys ever put a engine in ? Bring it up here and we will do the hedder install . SO I tell my friend that I know the bolts are in right and there is another problem . I go get my pressure checker for coolant systems while he removes the hedder again . Well guess what , the head had cracks in it between the bolts and all along the side of the head . AMT ported and polished that head and never checked to see if it was cracked . They did do another head but it was inattention to details that caused this .

The original builder was ignoring your engine and you took it somewhere else?

It appears that the owner of AMT that did Gregs engine build has neglected to return calls and is ignoring him . I have to say its been a while since the engine work was done but Greg said he had problems from the beginning . IMHO Grteg did what most would do , he hired a reputable builder whith years of experience and for his money got either a poor job or defective parts . I can only guess that since this is not a daily driver that AMT probably told Greg theat the oil burning would stop after the rings seal . But having some experience with the builder ona 440 that I mentioned I think Greg is just too nice . My first reaction would be to visit the business and welll make sure I got my point across . By the way those of you that haven't had the pleasure of seeing this car in person well, your missing something . Original owner , triple black , 4 spd , this car is sweeeet ! I personally tried to get Greg to bring it to BG and he's always been too busy so lets all try to talk him into it . There are just too few survivors left.

Thanks John for saying Mike will find and fix problem. I wish I knew him before Doug. I really don't understand Doug as I thing he's a good guy, well maybe. Guess I'm too nice,
but gave Doug many chances to fix problem.

No real update yet. The shop I took it to believes it's the rings and says he's still catching up on previous jobs and is very busy. I just hope I didn't get into another problem. The shop is G&M and Mike is the owner. Staged70 knows him and believes he'll find the problem. He's going to call, but I think I'll call him Monday since I haven't heard anything all week.
Thanks for asking. Will be talking soon

sounds a lot like the ring splits are all lined up. we had a new 64 pontiac which used a quart in 100 miles. motor was torn apart & the problem was that the ring splits were all aligned. once the rings were aligned properly, no more oil consumption problem.

Adam I can get you to Mikes shop if you need . They are very easy to find . All you have to do is pass the Hooters in south county down the outer road to Sappington Barracks road and make a left . They are the only shop there at the end of the road . You'll see a few GN's and your there .
Greg , my daughter called me the other day and tells me shes at an open house and theres a beautiful 70 Stage 1 in the garage . It's black dad you know your favorite color ! I hope you don't plan on moving to far .
