In the process of cleaning out my shop, I ran across a Thermoquad, covered with dust. Here's the numbers. 9212 S and then a 326 8 below that. Is this carb worth rebuilding? And if so, who out there might tackle it. Thanks in advance as always.
Thermoquad Looks like it came off a 1979 440 Truck HD. Refer to: www.bigblockmopar.net and www.kenalbin.com/tech for additional info. Looks like a keeper.
California smog emission model. Not something we would recommend building (unless you have a California Dodge truck you are trying to get through emissions testing). Jon.
There is a HUGE difference in these carburetors. The 1000 should be used for racing only! (OK, all you guys that are running 4.33 gears, a 3800 RPM stall converter and open exhausts go ahead and tell me you are running the 1000 successfully on the street!). Yes, I know it is possible. The point is that the 1000 CFM was obtained at the expense of the idle booster on the main venturi. There is no idle booster for the idle signal on the 1000. The 800 CFM, on the other hand, is a very tractable carburetor with excellent street manners. If placed in a full race condition, it will lose a little to the 1000 on a heavily built 455; but on street tires with a stock or minimally modified 455, you probably would not notice a performance difference, but the driveability would be much better. Rebuilt 800's are readily available by mail order, and are reasonable in price. 1000's are fairly scarce, and especially the early ones (4847s) should be left to the specialists. The later (4847sa) can be built by a good mechanic. Parts for either are readily available by mail order; but probably not locally. Jon.
TQ rebuilds In the late 70s I had two 1000 cfm T-Quads one on my 64 455 powered Skylark bracket racer the other on my 64 Chevy half ton with a 455 Buick running a factory STG 1 cam. NO high stall converter and it had 3.73 gears. It ran great on the street that is one of the reasons I would like to get the one I have left rebuilt to put on my 53. I didn't know parts were still available for the 1000. Where can I get them so I can rebuild my own. And where can you buy an 800. Bob Harris
You can try this link.... http://thermoquads.com/ or Jon's if you'd like a restoration or a new 9800 like the one shown in the link below; you'll still need to locate a good set of jets and rods though .... http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Perfcarb.htm
