Throttle cable bracket with SP-1

    I have the standard 350-4 bracket, but now with the SP-1 and the 1" (4) hole spacer I'm wondering if there is a bracket that can be ordered? Also I don't know if the cable itself will be long enough. Will I need another cable? I will be using the TH-350 with this 455 combo.

    Craig,

    I have a SP-1 with a Q-jet and my original 350-4 throttle cable was a real tight fit, I don't use a spacer. I ended up getting the cable off of a 71 AMC Javlin with an inline 6..........same ends as our Buicks, but it was an inch or so longer. It has worked well for me.

    The throttle cable off of Electras is longer and will work good for you. I am running an SP1 now without a spacer and did get the stock cable to fit, but it did involve cutting and rewelding the stock bracket to move it back and down 3/4".

    I just went to autozone and got a universal bracket that bolts on to the driver's rear carb bolt. hook it up, adjust out the slack and your ready to go. Cost about $5 bucks I think... I even have an extra sitting around just in case.

    I'm also trying to guesstimate hood clearance with the SP-1 and spacer. I've got a good drop base and 3" filter. When measuring from the pedistal, next to the one with the bracket above, to the higest point on the air cleaner I get 7.33".

    I guess there are other filter/breather options but I'd like to stay with the std 14" type until I get the cowl hood next year.

    Don't know about the hood clearance, I am running one of those edelbrock triangular foam filters (no drop) on an SP1 with a Holley 850DP and have no problems with hood clearance. I was actually able to close the hood with the stock air cleaner but it did touch. I also don't know if the air cleaner will clear the type of bracket I have. I haven't gotten my drop base yet, probably next week. I can snap a pic of the bracket on my motor and email it if you want.

    With an SP1 and a holley 950 hp, I had a 1" drop base with 3" filter and it JUST cleared the hood by less than 1/4". I was able to cut another 3/8" from the base to give me a solid 1/2" clearance for engine movement. I don't think you'll make it with the spacer unless your base is at least a true 2" drop base. This was on a '70 car with factory hood.

    Phillip that gives me a good indication thanks, I may have to go with a edelbrock triangular foam filters like Jeff did. My drop base drops 1.25".

    Jeff, I went to AutoZone and found a universal throttle cable bracket. I modified it and I think it will work :Do No: Here it is in the picture, the square receptical can be oriented several ways. Anyone think this will work? It is made by Spectre, pml #2428. I measured the maximum distance the throttle cable extends and positioned the square section the same distance from the carb. ball. The new location is 1.8" to the left and .9" down from the standard bracket on the SP-1. I assume the alignment is not critical, I'll just make sure it slides freely and nothing interfears with it.

    Craig,

    Alingment is very important, for correct pedal feel, and not causing undo wear on your carb.

    I use that very same bracket often, as when we go to the 1000 TQ, we run into all kinds of throttle cable issues. Move the bracket to the carb mounting bolt (LR one) and I think you will find that your alignment gets much better.

    Forget about the holes on the manifold.

    Here is a pic of that GSX we did, I cut this out of a larger photo and blew it up, so it is kinda grainy, but you should get the jist of it..

    I know I had to modify something on this, and it was another one of those 3 hour projects that always seem to crop up.. But I can't for the life of me recall exactly what it was.

    Jim, are you saying to move the square section to the inside of the open slide in the main part of the bracket. This would move the throttle inboard aligning it straighter with the carb.

    Yep... that's the one. But it needs to be on the left rear carb bolt for the right alignment. I didn't have any probs. except for adjusting out the slack, had to have two people for that.... one to step on the pedal and one to look at the throttle blades to make sure their WOT. The only clearance issue might be the air cleaner, but I doubt it.

    I moved the square section to the inside of the main bracket. It is almost aligned perfectly but low. I could slightly angle the bracket to allow for a straight shot. This bracket allows the square section to be slid forward and backwards throughout a range of almost 1.5" :)

    Craig,

    Move the whole bracket assembly, up to mount on the LR stud of the carb, as this should get both your height and alignment close, if not perfect. Assemble the brackets the way you did the first time. It is meant to be mounted on the corner stud of a Holley, but the spacing on your Q-jet is close, so it should work.

    Well I just did the last "thing to do", port match the headers and gaskets to the heads, I think I'll have a (another) :beer Now I just have to wait for fair weather for the dyno trip to Charlotte!

    Holley makes throttle cable braket and maybe even trans cable brakets the mount directly to the carb and work very nicely. I also believe lokar makes them.
