    Hello,
I’m in the process of installing a new tilt steering column and replacing factory rag joint with universal joints. Shaft end coming out of the column is a 1” double D shaft. I’m using a 1” double D to 3/4” double D universal joint (attached picture). Universal comes with 2 set screws (1 short & 1 long) my question is do I drill a through hole in the steering shaft so the long set screw can go through and just make dimple for the shorter set screw. Can’t find any info online to confirm, hoping someone has gone through this and can offer some advice. Much appreciated

Yes, drill through for the long screw to pass completely through the shaft. Then tighten and lock the short screw into the side of the shaft to take up any clearance and remove all looseness in the connection.

Thanks sir, I've been sitting here hesitant on drilling the shaft to get the universal joint mounted. Can't seem to find any info on this anywhere. Wish me luck.

Do I drill a hole through the solid doble D shaft as well?

I recently did this conversion. I’m almost certain I had to drill both ends. If you can wait I will get some pics after work today. One thing I can tell you to be careful of is to be mindful of where the steering wheel will end up. I positioned mine a little close to the dash and didn’t have much extra shaft left to extend it out. The process was a huge pain in the a**, but it sure is nice to have a tilt floor shift column where everything works as it should.

Drill through the solid shaft as well. The through bolt helps assure that the connection doesn't slide apart during body and frame flex events.
