Now that really does help out! Thanks a lot to you too, Adam. Im sure I pretty much do understand it now, I can actually use that pic when I am wiring it up, thanks to the location of the vaccum advance, which really helped out a lot. Once again, thanks! :TU:

    basic timing

Welllll, lets try this again, First it doesnt matter where the window is, it doesnt matter where the no1 is marked on the cap.
What matters is where the rotor is pointing when the crank is at the top of the compression stroke. That is when the ignition spark MUST occur or the engine aint going to start.
Now, with the distributer in the engine, rotate the engine untill you feel compression on no 1 cyl. :Brow: When you do the engine is coming up on the firing point for no 1 cyl. Bring [with a wrench] the crank up to top dead center on the timing marks.
Look under the cap and determine where the rotor is pointing. That is where no1 tower on the dist cap is,is,is,is. :Smarty:
Pull all of the wires out of the cap.
Put the wire from no1 spark plug to the tower on the dist. cap that is closest to the pointer on the rotor. If that tower is not directly over the pointer, rotate the dist. untill it is.
Then wire the rest of the cyls up in the correct firing order and the engine should start and run.
Next set the timing with a timing light to get it right on. :TU:

    Also...

Something I learned yesterday you can do on a Buick...the distributor is out..don't know if your on the right stroke? By yourself and can't get the whole finger over the spark plug and turn the motor at the same time? Look at the cam gear throught the distributor hole!! turn the motor over (clockwise) by hand while looking at the cam gear...eventually you'll see the timing mark come up from the 6 thru the 9 oclock position, stop, back the crank up (CCW) until your timing mark is at 0...voila....TDC on the right stroke....
