Anyone have one done ? Can they be somehow "upgraded" to more durable contacts and still appear original ? I have seen Tim's way around this (Project Orange Crush ) , but I'd rather just get mine done and leave it original. If someone has a spare they could sell , I'd think about that , too . Thanks everyone !

was tim's way using relays with the factory switch? if not that's an option too and pretty easy to hide and just run one extra wire from the fuse block to the trunk.

The way I did it everything is still stock looking, and no factory harnesses were cut or spliced. I can unplug the system and go back to stock in about 5 minutes (unless you want relays removed too in which case it would take about 15).

I can understand not wanting to add relays etc. Fair enough. There is nothing to rebuild in the switch really, take the metal clips off and you will see the contacts and such, its very simple. You can use parts out of a rear defrost switch as they didn't carry much current and are usually pretty good. The reason the top switch springs back to center and the rear defrost ones don't is simply how much the tangs are bent!

In fact, if you want to, you could use the rear defrsot switch with mods and it would work fine, the pins are located differently though which would mean using a rear defrost connector and then wiring it up to match what you like.

There can be a lot of current going through those contacts, and they are tiny. GM was on crack when they designed that system.

There is a top switch rebuilder but you may be able to fix it yourself if you take it apart. I thin the Parts Place sells them rebuilt but I suspect they just get someone to rebuild cores.

    Here is a rebuilder : http://www.jpintoweb.com/

i filed off the burnt carbon scoring then lubed the contacts with dielectric grease, this may keep them alittle cooler

I do have an extra switch, I think. Have to check the box of parts if you want to go that route. Not sure what they are worth. Matter of fact I have a bunch of extra parts that I will be letting go soon. Little clips, and hard to find stuff. Anyway let me know if you want a switch.

I'll PM you about the switch . I took mine apart and it's REALLY worn out . I file everything down but , let's be honest . If you lived in California and had a big-block ragtop , wouldn't you put the top up and down as often as you could ?? I think that explains the excessive use. P.S Doug , just shut your pie-hole .
