Transmission leak

    Hi everyone,

I noticed three days ago that my original turbo 350 transmission was leaking from my 1971 Skylark. I drive the car once a week on weekends and the leak was noticable as a small pool of transmission fluid was under the transmission pan. I filled the tranmission back up to level and put in a sealer/conditioner and the leak is now smaller after a few days (I did drive the car for a while after putting in the conditioner) but the leak is not totally gone. The leak is coming from the back of the transmission pan (toward the back end of the car) and the transmission has only 45,000 miles on it (and I never beat on the car). Seems like I will have to change the transmission pan seal (I guess that I should change the transmission filter as well since I will have access to it). What is the torque that I should use when retightening the bolts and are there are tips for the job or other things to look for?

changing the pan gasket, fluid and filter is probably a good idea at 45K even if there wasn't the leak--I change mine every 20-30K just for peace of mind. The pan bolts should be torqued to 10-12 ft./lbs. Also, check that the fluid is actually leaking from the pan gasket, if the fluid is dripping of the back of the pan it could be leaking from the tranny's rear seal--is the trans mount covered in fluid? If it is then you're probably looking at doing the rear seal which is just as easy as the pan gasket...

Let us know what ya find out!

    >>Hi Adam. You were right. The leak was coming from the tranny's rear seal. But I changed the pan gasket as well anyway. Thanks for your help and advice! :TU:
