The washers used on the trans mount bolts are close to 1/4in but have a 7/16 hole The crossmember cushions being worn can be an issue also,...I've gotten where I use the chevelle or Olds crossmembers they bolt directly to the frame,..eliminating unwanted twist
Yeah I grenaded a rear once and before it blew up it ripped out the Buick crossmember. It sheared the one end off like it was butter. A Chevelle crossmember went back in and one is under the X-Camino as well. A nice short convertible style one. Duane
You need to use the same style/year as your car. If you are working on a 68-72 Buick, then you need the same year off a Cutlass or Chevelle. You also need to use the ones with the correct length. If you have a boxed frame, such as on a convertible or El Camino, then you need the shorter “convertible” style unit. The olds ones are like the Buicks, with a BB & SB style for each length. If you don’t care if the BB slot is cut into it for the emergency brake cable, then the SB versions will work fine and are a lot cheaper. You can also use a Chevelle 4-speed unit if you want, but they usually generate a bit of money, so it is better to sell them and use the automatic style. Duane
Steering Box Bolt Washers are pretty close. AMK Specs are . . . . . .46 ID X 1.13 D X .19 TK FLAT WA PHOS
Brett, these are almost dead on and stainless. This guy says he will make what you want. Maybe only quantity, though. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1138246781...115f461810ab8fbea4127bfffe1ad6|iid:1#shpCntId
Naturally, they are missing Jason! Whenever you hear about one of these non obtainable things you always find out it's missing on your car, too.
Great thread- I found these on my recent 68 3-speed and carefully threw them in the bag with the incorrect bolts holding the mount to the crossmember. I will be needing a replacement for a couple others. I will have to share a picture of the crossmember though...ugh. welded 1/8 to ends with big torch holes
Same seller, correct size. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1138246951...udynpnpQQm&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Here's a pic of the 71 assembly manual. I wanted to see if they specified a shim in 71 also. Plus my 71 manual is a little clearer. If I'm reading the 71 manual correctly, it's only specifying the shims for the T-400 and nor the 4 speeds?
Yep. I mentioned that earlier in this thread. Probably due to the different length of the driveshaft?
