I am planning on taking out the original TH200C trans. out of my 85 Regal and replacing it with a TH350. I have heard it was a direct fit with only a few modifications with some linkage or something. Both transmissions are the same overall length .Could someone please tell me what I will have to change to make this work. Thanks in advance Allen
350 turbo swap I swaped the 200metric in my 85 Regal with a 350 turbo and it is a direct bolt in. Just un-plug the wiring from the 200 and tie back or remove it. You will also need a new converter as the computer controlled converter in the 200 won't work in the turbo. I didn't have to change any of the linkage. Hope this helps!
first problems The first question I have isoes the 200 and 350 have the same rubber bushing that goes between the transmission and crossmember?Because the 350 trans that I put in did not have the bushing on it so I used the one off the 200.It seems to be way too thick,I can jack the rear of the transmission nearly all the way up till it touches the underside of the car but still cannot get it in there. Also:The torque converter on the 200 was threaded but the 350 torque converter is not so my question is :are these special type bolts/nuts that will hold the flywheel to TC for the 350 trans?Would anyone have part numbers for them?
First Answer I'm using an aftermarket transmission mount (you called it rubber bushing) and it is 1 1/2" (approx thick). I think you problem is you have the jack in the wrong place. Put the jack under the transmission pan (maybe some rubber/rag) between the jack and transmission pan and jack it up. this will push the transmission up and not just the tail of the transmission. I think you will see that the transmission will go straight up (not just the tail) and will give you enough room to get the mount in. As for the bolts that hold the torque converter to the flexplate, get some grade 8 bolts that are long enough to pass through the converter and flexplate and have about three threads showing after the nuts are tightened on them. If you have locktite handy put it on the bolts before you tighten up the nuts. Hope this helps.
I hope I'm not hijacking this thread but I thought I could dig for more info here since it is about transmission swaps. If I'm swapping a powerglide tranny to a TH400, what changes need to be made aside from the driveshaft length?
Powerglide to 400 turbo Driveshaft, dipstick, crossmember, shifter, and electric kickdown (the latest issue of Car Craft magazine has an article on electric kickdown) Note: Look in the magazine to make sure you have the right one. It is in an article about 400 transmissions by John Kilgore I believe.
on the 400 you will need a 400 style driveshaft yoke as far as a 350 trans swap it is direct replacement but you will need to add a vacuum line to modulator. you can get torque convertor bolts at almost any parts store i would suggest a new trans mount as they are usually broke you could hunt down a 350 with a lock up convertor adjusting the downshift cable will be importent
Thanks for the replies, guys.I have the transmission bolted in now.I just had to stop and take a break and learn a little patience.Everything fit right in. Next question :.Are all TH350 kick-down cables the same length. The cable that came with the trans almost fits in the existing throttle bracket that housed the TV cable from the 200C.It will fit from the trans to the square hole where it mounts but it is too long from there to the carb.Do I need to get a different throttle bracket? If so,will I have to find one within a couple years of my car and model specific from my local junkyard or can I get a GM generic adjustable one fron the parts store?I noticed that the throttle cable,kick-down cable and fuel line were attached to this bracket.Any help with this would be appreciated.
there are different length cables and styles depending on motor/trans/year combo but they do have adjustment and if nessecary you can take up some slack with lead type fishing sinkers. but you should have some slack in it . what type carb end does it have? long slotted metal end or cable to a plastic snap on clip onto carb? the slotted end will have atleast an inch of slackfrom carb stud it will not be tight on carb either way like the 200c as the 200c relies solely on the cable to build pressure to control shift points as the 350 uses vacuum and the cable is more for downshifts the cable you have should be ok if the square end is fitting into your bracket depending on carb you are useing
OK,I have the transmission in and have driven it a few times. It shifts great even though I have not hooked up the kick-down cable yet.I have two leaks that I need to ask some questions about. My bad leak is at the dipstick tube. This tube has a o ring near the end of it but the tube does not have a bracket so as to mount it to keep it from flopping around. The 200C had a bracket pressed on the tube that bolted to the bellhousing to engine bolts. Are the holes for the th350 and th200c the same? The reason for asking is that I was thinking about using the dipstick and tube that came out of the 200C trans even though they have a different contour,The tube out of the 200C has a different type of seal,It fits inside the hole and then the dipstick fits into it. The other leak is where the speedo cable goes into the trans.I am assuming that there is a seal or two that goes there also? How are they installed?Part numbers? Any info or past experiences with soloutions with these problems would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Allen
i dont think the the 200 is the same but you could get one from a newer regal with a 350 trans has a better style seal and mounting bracket or a replacement dipstick as far as speedo there is a seal inside that rides on the speedo gear and you might need to replace speedo gear as it is only plastic yank it out and take it up to a trans shop they should have something you could try the speedo out of the 200c if it wasnt leaking and if it matches .there are 2 sizes of speedo housings so check that before you try
