Tri-Shield TH400

    I need some advice here...

I'm thinking of buying the level 2 TH400 package from tri-shield performance. It would be going behind a badass pump gas iron head 455 "for now". My concern is: I only want to buy one trans, so will it last for my future plans- a twin turbo 455 with some serious power?

Anyone here using this trans? I'm sure it works well, I just want to know how much abuse this thing will tolerate or should I "go bigger"?

A TH 400 is one tough trans. It was designed in the muscle car era to handle the GM big block engine torque.

All you need to do is PM Jim Weise. Let him know what you have in mind.

JW has a bunch of TH 400s on hand. Sometime look at the input shaft diameter on one of those compared to a more modern trans like a 200R or a 700R.

    Jim,
Remember the stories about the experimental Turbo charged Nailheads that snapped the THM 400 input shafts. Now that's torque.

I have some excellent pictures of that engine... I love showing it off to the import lover friends of mine and telling them it was never produced because it broke GM's toughest trans!!!

I think they were breaking the dyna flow input shafts - circa 1962-3
still probably could do some damage to a ST400 too @ that torque:Brow:

    cool... thanks for some feedback...

I'm planning on sticking it behind a 450-500 hp 455 for now, which I know it'll play nice with... but there is a twin turbo 494 stroker in my future... so I'll have to give JW a shout...

I installed one of Jim's Level 2 T400's with clutch upgrade, hughes deep alu pan and a custom converter behind a 625 HP motor last year. Working great!
I would call him up and discuss your needs.

:Comp: Well while out on saturday night I ran into an old friend who says he can make my TH350 live behind a pretty bad-ass big block, but it won't hold up for any crazy turbo ideas . He's got the convertor I need already (slightly used) and the price he gave me for a hi-po rebuild is too good to refuse... I'm starting to think about abusing a trans I already have... When I told him about my crazy turbo ideas... he said he could make a TH400 put up with up to 1000 hp for a good price too... he's got a great reputation around here so I'm seriously thinking about it instead of Tri-Shield (no offense Jim)... not only that, if I break something he's a little closer by... lol.
    :Do No:
Then again, pulling that trans for the second time when I build that twin turbo motor won't be fun... and I know where a long shaft BOP TH400 is... problem is I have to part out the $400 rustbucket '72 catalina it's hiding in, so... maybe I'm just lazy, or maybe my landlord would have a heart attack if he saw ANOTHER old car getting yanked apart in the shop or in the driveway... but a free trans is still a free trans... :Brow: Anyone want some poncho parts? it's got a 400-4 in it...
