-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am a little confused right now. Ive been eyeing a 71 for quiet some time now and finally decided to buy it. The whole time, I thought it was red with a black vinyl top and black bucket seats. The cowl tag seems to show fire red with a white top and 168 interior (which Im not sure if thats black or what). Any help would be great. My tag reads as follows. ST71 43437FL1 039899 TR 168 75 A PNT 12D I really appreciate it and thanks in advance.
Is that not an odd color combo? I figured it would have a black top/red lower body/black interior. Was this a common combo? also, where can you find out the vinyl top color codes and seat codes? Thanks
Not really. Sounds pretty attractive to me. I will say this: The white top would be a real pain to keep clean :Smarty: .
Oh yeah, I think its attactive, just odd. I really like the combo and the fact that it is odd, but it just confused me. Really though, was this a common color combo or is this a pretty rare car? Thanks
Red cars with white tops are very common among all GM A bodies. Even with black interiors. No rules that said to had to be same color as interior. This is a common error people assume. I had an original 70 442 that was rallye red wiht white top and black interior and yes white tops are a pain to keep clean. two tone paint with a white painted top would be easier to clean but for some strange reason two tone cars are very rare. I think people were in love with vinyl tops at the time. Never figured that out as they just cause rust issues. I may eliminate my vinyl top and just go with two tone paint.
Single Stage, I have a book called Catalog of American Car ID Numbers 1970-79. It has all paint and interior codes for all makes however for some reason it lists the sales code for top colors and not the letters on the cowl tag. These codes are in service manuals in the general info section. These are the 71 top codes for vinyl and convert. 70 and 72 had some different colors as well. A White B Black E Sandalwood F Dark Brown(not convert) G Dark Green
Hi. My car has an "8" for the upper body code. Anyone know what that is? Its a 71 GS 350 53 (Cortez Gold) with "8" to the right.
looks like other 8's on the tag and not like the B in BDY. however... after typing that first sentence, I went out and put paper down on it and hit it with the ole pencil. Looks like a B to me. Thanks. Cortez Gold with Black Vinyl was very common from what I've seen so far. At least its a 4-speed car.
