Well on my last of 5 runs at the track the other night with this rebuilt turbo 350 about 80% of the way down the track the motor felt like it went down in power 15-20% all of a sudden .......then when I got on the return road the trans feels like it must be slipping as the engine is taching higher and the car really isnt moving as well as it was before .......I can barely feel my shifts which in part is due to this new looser converter but you could at least feel them before . I have done the following and still no change ...

Pulled cleaned vacuum mod and valve, even swapped mod with another I had that was working

Pulled governor no problems noted , was free , even replaced governor with my other one still no change

dropped the pan , no metal and only a tad bit of clutch material in the pan maybe fingernail sized spot

dropped the valve body , no hung valves , pulled each one out of the bores no issues whatsoever.

Readjusted the kickdown cable just as a last resort - no change even ran without it connected no change

Checked vac line to modulator a-ok.....

I am running a 12" cooler was running very cold NOW the cooler is mad hot and the paint has all burned off the front of the new converter after a 5 mile loop...

fluid is red - not brown or black , doesnt smell burnt proper level

So do any of you trans guys have any ideas...is the sudden drop in power during a 1/4 run like that indicative of some sort of deep seal letting go inside the tranny at high speed ? I believe it is toast after only 300 miles and 5 runs at the track. I am putting out approximately 425-435 hp at best cant a 350 handle that power level ? This is my second rebuilt Turbo 350 I have toasted..the first one ate the int sprag out of it at around 3k miles .

I would suggest hooking a pressure gauge to the test port on the trans and compare the readings to the service manual. Maybe someone can post a copy for you to compare to, I currently am away from mine, otherwise I would. You will need a 0 to 300 psi gauge since reverse pressure is usually over 200 psi. If you have a fluid pressure loss it will clue you in as to where the problem may be. If all shifts are weak including reverse engagement then it could be a pressure regulator valve or pump problem. Let us know what you find.

A TH-350 properly built should handle that power with no problems. I ran one behind my approx. 500HP BBB for many years without any issues, before putting a 200-R4 in it last year. Wish I had made the swap a long time ago.

  3. swap a stock converter in to test and see if it's the converter . a slipping trans should show some clutch material if it's that bad. a poor converter will heat up the fluid and the burnt paint on the converter is saying it has been hot

    What converter are you running?

I agree---- if it was the trans there should probably be evidence in the pan ...I have zip in my pan - nothing ......so I will try the converter first ...... the converters burned off paint is probably a huge clue here....I think something let go in it on that last pass ....when I just did break in trips on the new trans and converter I was really impressed how cool my tranny cooler was running after say a 45 min trip - both stop and go and highway driving - so it was working great (converter) before this happened. The paint on the converter was also 100% intact during that time ....... The tranny cooler is mad hot now on just a 10 min drive. I am no longer driving it so as not to hurt anything. Thanks for the advice ...will let everyone know what gives after trying the converter .....
