When my tranny gets warm/hot it seems as though the car goes into neutral and will not move in any gear. When it cools down it seems to drive/shift fine again? But for a short time until it heats up again. The fluids all smell and look fine (No burnt toast smell)

Could this be a defective torque converter? (Because it seems to shift fine when cool?).

I don't have any history on this car as it was just purchased (Bad brakes, tranny was fine according to the guy who sold it to me!:af: )

    Thanks,
    Tom

It can be a few things...clogged filter, worn clutches, worn front pump, stuck oil pressure regulator, low fluid level. The symptom is that of low pressure, probably high enough while the fluid is thicker (colder), then bad news once it warms up and thins out. I'd start with a pan inspection and filter change if the fluid level is OK.

I had similar problems, once it got warm / warm out side [never did it in winter or when colder out.] in the summer it would start to not shift into 3rd and when you let off the gas it was like in N. After a while it would start to not shift into 2nd either.

One way I was able to get around it was to man shift the car up and down at a stop. When I would go to stop, id down shift 3-2-1, wait then take off and shift up myself 1-2-3.

Doing the shifting myself would stop it from doing that. But soon as I would forget and make a few stops without shifting up and down it would start up again. [#1 reason I put in a floor shifter to make it easier.]

Doing a flush and fill with seafoam trans cleaner did seem to help allot but then my front seal leaked like a terrorist who took a .50 round in the chest but only for one day, then it never leaked again.

It was the last straw on that one. Got me a Discover card with a $1500 limit and paid PAE to build me a new trans.

I know have easy monthly payments and I love that new trans.

I replaced and checked allot before I got a new one built, last tip I got was maybe the govoner was all gummed up. Got gummier as it get hot, dunno though.

Strange one, but sounds like low oil pressure after warming up. You have already changed the obvious, but have you check the vacuum modulator. It may be getting stuck when warming up. If you remove the vacuum from the modulator the transmission will not shift up at all. I would try looking at all the vacuum lines going to modulator for cracks (that might be closed when cold, but open up enough when warm). Question, is the vacuum source directly from the manifold, or is it attached to a TVS valve that regulates vacuum with temperature?:3gears:

The governor is a possibility, along with front pump seals (internal ones).

My reasoning why it seems to work manual shifting is that when you use 1 or 2 then shift to DR, the line pressure is usually higher than in DR alone. So if you use the manual approach, chances are that the line pressure will be high enough to engage high clutches and release 2nd gear band.

    Hope all this helps.:bglasses:
