During an awesome burnout at the track today, I snapped my driveshaft in half and broke the tailshaft housing on my turbo 350. Can someone tell me if it is possible to change the tail shaft housing while the transmission is still in the car. At first glance, it doesn't look like anything on the transmission is broke and it looks like I can get to all the bolts. The car is Bruiser, my 70 GS 455 Replica. I am happy that I had the driveshaft loop.
That would be just the 5 bolts, the mount and the speedo cable, you got lucky, The last time I broke a drive shaft the transmission broke at the back of the BLOCK, JUNK, did use all the inners. Good luck. Johnny
I think I just cracked the tailshaft housing, I don't believe I damaged the shaft. That half of the driveshaft is still plugged into the transmission. I will take a better look at it today.
Every time I have seen someone break a drive shaft, the bell housing gets cracked. You will need to carefully check that, not always easy to see. It can be welded being it is aluminum. Not that uncommon, I have seen a few club members do this, and when I swapped out my switch pitch transmission, I realized that it had been cracked and repaired at least a decade before I owned the car.
Upon closer inspection today, the case is cracked. Time to move to a Turbo 400. Luckily there is one for sale from a trusted local Buick resource. It is missing a dipstick and tube, so I will be posting for them in the parts wanted section soon. Thank you everyone for your replies.
