Converting a long tail to a short tail. Can this be done by a mechanically inclined person without too much trouble?
Any special tools required? Or am I farther ahead to leave for a pro?
    Thanks Doug

Pretty sure the transmission has to be completely disassembled. I might be wrong. Someone will know for sure.

Trans has to be completely disassembled, unfortunately.

Not saying you can't do it, it requires no special tools, just some know-how.. I suggest getting a manual, Ron Sessions "How to work with and Modify the TH-400" is the Bible, but I believe it may be out of print..

If it looks too complicated, then it would be best to let a trans shop do it.

If the trans has not been build recently, it's an easy thing to do in an overhaul. I do it all the time, just converted a 71 Electra trans for GS duty here last week.

To convert to a short tail, you need the outer tailshaft housing (obviously) AND the shorter output shaft.... which requires complete disassembly.

Im have to do that also. On the output shaft I was told it has to be flat without radius where shaft meets gear. I will post when I get home. Were is the best place to get the shaft and housing and other parts for a transbrake build.

Here's what I was talking about where he said to take the radius out of it.

I built my first TH400 (1985?) without any special tools. Wouldn't want to do that again; made
a few tools, bought a few, job gets far easier. Made a stand to hold it on its tail, and a special
handle/clamp for lifting that 40 lb gear set in place. Bought guides for clutch piston seals.
