Turbo 400 with gv speedo gear set up

I want to remove my speedo gear from the th400 and put in a plug, but i read somewhere the gear helps lube the rear busing. WHat do you think, good or bad idea to put a plug instead of using the gear.

 

Some older Olds, and I think, Caddys came this way from the factory. They drove the speedo off the front wheel, so, no reason for the speedo gear in the trans.

No lube issues, I put plugs in race trans' all the time.

So do some of the 400's in GM 4wd trucks. The speedo is in the transfer case on those.
