Turn Signal Switch or Cancelling Cam, which is it?

I've got a problem with my turn signal lever. When I want to turn left, I have to hold the lever down to make it flash. It will not stay in place by itself. It works when I want to turn right, but not left. So, do I need a new turn signal switch or is it the cancelling cam that I need? Thanks a lot!

How about a combination of the two names, "turn signal cancel cam", that's what most call it.

They aren't the same thing. I was looking in my YearOne catalog and there s a "Turn Signal Switch" and "Turn Signal Cancelling Cam". I need to know which to buy to fix the problem I'm having.

Have you removed the wheel yet??

My 64 is doing the same thing you describe, and it looks like I'll have to remove the wheel to determine exactly what the problem is.

I just looked at my Y-O catalogue, and realized what a doofus my previous response makes me look like. :Dou: :Dou: :Dou:

(Note to self: research your answer first Tom. :spank: )

Edit: Just had a good look at my spare turn signal switch, and I'd wager that is what you need, based on how it operates. It is supposed to stop at both left and right turn indicator positions without being held in place.

The cancel cams job is to turn the switch off after you operate it. If it works properly for a right turn, it will work for a left turn. It is not one direction only.
Hope this is more helpful, but if you're not 100% certain, I'd remove the wheel.

Take a look at this picture. It is the turn signal switch. I have circled an area in the picture. There are 2 spring clips, one on each side, that are responsible for cancelling the turn signal. They sometimes fatique and snap. They are replaceable. Years ago, I replaced one on my 72 skylark. It's worth a look. BTW, I believe the cancelling cam has more to do with the horn than the turn signal.
