TV Cable adjustment on a 76' 200 trans....

I am having some shifting problems with my 76 Skylark. The car is bone stock, 80k ,with a 231 odd-fire V6 (2bbl) and a 200 transmission. The problems are as follows:

    1. Car has to have idle set very high (over 1000rpm) in order to continue running once it is shifted into gear (barely 650rpm) with brake applied. This elevated idle rpm also creates a condition where engine must be shut off in gear, or it will run on for a short time, especially once the motor is warm. (Timing was set at 12 degrees with the vacuum advance disconnected, and the vacuum advance is currently connected to manifold vacuum, not ported vacuum at the carb)

    2. Trans shifts too quickly. Under normal acceleration the trans shifts into 2nd at 10 mph, and into high gear at 20 mph. This loads the engine down and makes the motor ping as it pulls up to speed (50mph or more).

    3. The transmission does not downshift until it comes to almost a complete stop. If you slow down to 5 mph, and then accelerate, the trans is still in high gear. Sometimes you can stop very briefly at a traffic light and it seems like it will take off in 2nd gear instead of low.

    4. It seems like the torque converter is "tight", with a very low stall speed.

So this gets us to my questions for the transmission experts here on the board. Can a shift points on a 200 transmission be adjusted with the TV cable? If not, how can the shift points be raised? The car will shift later if I put my foot in it, but it is hard to get any gas mileage out of it if I have to drive it like I stole it all the time. This is my driver while I work on my Riviera. Eventually it will have a 455/400 transplant for bracket racing, but for now I would settle for it to run and shift normally.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Randy
