TV cable trans question

Ive heard of people adjusting a TV cable (on say a 200R4) a few clicks for later shifts when driving. This is essentially the same as screwing in an adjustable modulator all the way (say on a TH350) for later shifts, correct?

I mean, youre just adding a little pressure to oppose governor pressure right?

So what is the downside to adjusting a TV setup a few clicks for later shifts? Or for that matter, a lot of clicks?

Thinking casually about it, there must be a point of adjustment where you start getting detent downshifts too early, or downshifting 2 gears or something because you are fooling the trans into thinking you have more throttle open than you really do.

Am I thinking about this the right way? Thanks for any thoughts.

Although I'm sure slight adjustments are no problem but if you tighten it too much you may not have enough travel at WOT. The TV cable was designed to operate in the correct position, which is the cable fully pulled out at WOT. Make sense?

From what I understand about the 2oo-4R is you set the cable in the correct positiion. There is only a correct position for the cable to control the plunger
properly. Otherwise it's too loose or too tight. There have been posts on the subject in the past, all you have to do is find them. I believe Turbo Buick
has a web site with this info. Good Luck

:gp: The geometry is critical on this transmission get it right or have a pile of bad parts.

I think you are right-on. going a few clicks shorter might keep you from reaching the full throttle stop on the Qjet.

Im about to get my nailhead/200R4 combo on the road for the first time,,,a high school friend who now runs a tranny shop told me it has to be adjusted properly or i'll end up with a smoked transmission within a mile or 2!!!
Better make sure you get it set up properly!!!

That 2004r sounds awfully sensitive to the TV positioning. Bet the 700r4 is like it too. Old hydro's were sensitive but not that sensitive. At least they wouldn't burn out over 2 miles.:beers2:

Like the others said, get it right, set like the manual says, if not sure check pressures at various TV positions and see if they measure what the manual lists.:TU:

By design of the system one would certainly be most comfortable setting it "properly" or by prescribed method. Best reliability is probably achieved this way.

Certainly you wouldnt want to set it "loose" to where there was slippage, as pointed out that would quickly cook the trans.

However what I am referring to is the "common?" practice of adjusting for slightly more TV pressure ie a click or two. More tv pressure = more apply, surely this will not burn the trans up.

Later shifts (slightly) can be achieved this way according to CK performance and some on various boards.

I was really just hoping that someone who had tried it could share the experience, and any downside thay had found.

I think too loose is what you can have problems with. Too tight and you might not have enough travel, but the trans should be fine.

I agree. I will try a few clicks with the pressure gage on to see the effects, being sure not to inhibit WOT.

My valve body is an OG code (junkola) anyhow, so I cant imagine it helping any.

    Just curious really.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.
