Under hood insulation installation

Discussion in 'Classic Buicks' started by 60buickdroptop, Dec 25, 2015.

  1. I am adding new under the hood insulation to my 60 Buick and would like to know which way the replacement insulation is installed. Does the hard backing go toward the hood or does the insulation material go toward the hood? There sees to be a diversity of opinions on this subject.

  2. 70 views and no one has an answer, opinion or information on where to get the information?? If this is how this site responds to questions, this apparently is not the site I thought it might be. Happy New Year.

It's been a long time since I've seen a new 60 hood insulation. If I recall, one side looks like a grid/honeycomb (which I believe is the side you a referring to as the hard side), and the other side looks like the bare insulation. Correct?

Here is what is did in 2005...hopefully you can tell from the photo which side is toward the hood. Because I can't

  4. Smartin,

Thank you for your response & the photo. You are correct in what I described. It helps me to know that I might have installed mine incorrectly as I placed the hard side to the hood and tucked the loose side under the hood support frame, cutting each space out so it looks like a 10 piece yellow against black, mosaic pattern. It took about 3 hours to do this cut and tuck. However, no adhesive was used and I can replace it if necessary.

BTW: Are those some kind of brackets holding the insulation in place on the hood in your picture?

I just went to my original 60 and shot some (terrible) pictures for reference...yes they are brackets that I believe snap into holes, but I've never had them out.

  6. Your pic are god enough to see what I didn't expect to see. Not having seen an original hood with factory insulation still in it, I never expected to see what you just showed me in your photos. What model is yours-Le Sabre, Invicta, Electra? Sorry, but that just doesn't look like anything I expected to see especially on a Buick. Do those brackets twist away from the insulation...possibly to make it easier to change out the insulation if and when required?

This is on my '64 Riv. & I know it's correct as I've owned the car since new. This may or may-not be the way a '60 was installed from the factory, but I think/feel it looks better with the hard side facing out rather than having the yellow facing out. Then the insulation can be cut to fit inside the hood bracing so no glue is nec. But, this depends on how big of a span there are between the braces. Looking at the pictures Adam posted I don't think the span will be a problem.

It is an Electra 225. Should be the same through all models. The brackets should snap in and out, no twisting.

  9. Well, here's the situation I have. The under hood framework that supports the actual hood only has 4 holes in it, two on each outboard side:puzzled:. One hole is toward the front of the hood, the second hole is toward the back of the hood. Just not enough holes for the 8 brackets that appear to be on your hood and none in the locations shown on your hood.

I will post some photos tomorrow.

Here are the photos of my insulation install showing the holes and their location. The fingers point to two of the holes and each hole has a twin directly across from the ones pointed to in the same locations. Sorry about the pictures. I've had a hell of a time getting them to post and couldn't get them to reduce in size.

I have tried to search google images looking for engine compartment underhood photos, and the only ones I can really find are the ones I have already posted!

I did find one Invicta that has the same brackets as my car. Have you checked out the 1960 Buick Facebook page yet? There are 500 members, all 60 Buick owners on there. The knowledge is there.
