Hope no rust? In the few I've peeled the top off of, you are going to have finished metal, but with the glue on there you are going to have to re finish it.
Mine looked like Scotts but was all dry. I used a 120 grit disk and a orbit sander then reprimed. It sanded off real easy.
My 72 GS had the same nasty mess of old glue after removing the vinyl. I found some evidence of a blue overspray on the center of the roof, and this is an original red car. May have been just a base of blue dusted on as a starter coat before the red was applied at the factory. My solder joints at the roof to quarter seams are filled with plastic filler--very old and cracked plastic filler at this point--not lead. Barring any rust or dents, you should be able to clean the glue and prime the roof. However, most cars will have at least some rust, and probably a few dents, too! Thanks, Rudy.
when i removed the vinyl roof (2nd edition), there was no rust under the vinyl. instead the roof steel was painted yellow. i know that the fellow that i purchased the car from, had replaced the vinyl roof in the late 90's and i guess that he painted the roof prior to installing the new cover.
