If you haven't heard yet, there was yet another mass shooting today. This time at a 4th of July parade in Highland Park, IL. 6 dead and 24 injured. Shooter was on a roof when opening fire. Rifle has been recovered but suspect is still at large.

If you have a moment please say a prayer for the victims and for the swift capture of the shooter.

Mods if you feel this thread may cause problems here, go ahead and close it.

So I want to explain why I posted this. I do not live in Highland Park. But I'm like a 15 minute drive away from there via a highway. When my daughter was much younger i used to take her there a lot because they have a very nice park/playground there. So we are very familiar with the area. So this hits very close to home.

On top of that this happened during a 4th of July parade. Those are the textbook example of a family event. They have not released details of who got shot, but it is very likely young children are among the victims.

I also need to clarify to the Chicago haters, Highland Park is a very affluent community. Not the richest in the area, but up there. This is NOT some inner city thing (not that it would make a difference to me). For this to happen in a place like this is even more shocking.

No No, I prayed he is taken alive and we hear why he did such a thing and possibly if he was paid or put up to it?

P.S. My guess? If he was? He'll get popped for sure!

Ya know not everything is a conspiracy theory!

My wife read me the story about this shooting about an hour ago. My first thought was for the families left behind. How will they ever look at July 4th without seeing their lost loved ones. We continue to pray for those shot and hurt during this incident, as well as the families.

Terrible event, I believe that if the current description is correct he has already taken his life. For him to survive apprehension is also unlikely unfortunately. Would be nice to gain access to one of these profiles

Have not heard about the shooters death from local news yet. They still say he is still at large. But number of injured upped to 32. An 8 year old is among the victims.

And to add insult to injury there is a tornado watch/warning in the area.

Unless the shooter kills themself, i do believe they will be captured alive.

Those considering evil acts need to understand there are fatal consequences and there will be no glory, except for the law enforcement officials who take them down. And instead of the media showing video of petrified victims, they should air video of the perp being gunned down.

Problem with that is that most of these scumbags are suicidal or ready to die. So its not really that big a deterrent you would think it would be.

Everytime I go to an event, I think there will be a shooter. Sad days i live in these days. Ever since that las vegas shooting I felt unsafe anywhere I go.

Meh, most of us get that this is a bad thing. The shooter types are the exception. Which means the visual takedowns wont make a difference to those types of people.

Unfortunately, in a free society, when the mentally ill decided they are going to kill themselves, and take as many folks with them that they can, there is little we can do about it.

    That's just the plain truth.

The method of their terror is not the issue, we have seen these folks do this with handguns, assault rifles, hunting rifles, knives, bombs, arson, and automobiles, just to name the ones that come right to the top of my head.

The media focuses too much on the method, and too little on the individual. You want to slow this down.. not likely we will ever stop it... then we need to focus on a multi prong attack.

    • Restrict firearms from people that should not have them- that's obvious, but with over 300 million guns in circulation, if they want a gun, they will get one. Genie is out of the bottle here.. Red flag laws are problematic.. who decides if your too crazy for gun ownership. And the second amendment to the constitution is clear, and was written so the population could protect themselves from the tyranny of an oppressive government. So while background checks and that are fine, there is no gun control solution here. These things happening in the cities that have the most restrictive gun laws is telling. Your not going to legislate this problem away with gun control.

    • Identify the mentally ill, and put in strong laws to protect others from these individuals. 30 or so years ago we turned thousands of the mentally ill out of asylums, for mostly monetary and political reasons. How many of these shooters should have been institutionalized, under lock and key. More than a few.

    • Harden the targets.. this does not happen at Presidential outings, for one reason.. they harden the target.. be it a 50 person meeting room, or Yankee Stadium. Schools have to have 1 controlled entrance point, and at least 2 armed guards on site at all times. One at the door, and the other patrolling the halls. As soon as the reality of a the school being a hard target permeates the public, school shootings will stop. Politicians not doing this are guilty of criminal negligence.

    • Public events have to have extensive police and homeland security presence. Again, once this is known, the likelihood of something like today happening again will decrease.
And most of all, resist turning these events into a political wedge issue. That's not solving the problem, it simply trying to get your candidate elected. The media is wonderful at this. Both parties are guilty of this. It needs to stop.

"Restrict firearms from people should not have them" The NRA has fought and were succesful in getting those kinds of laws repealed.

"Identify the mentally ill" See my answer above.

"Harden the targets" Heres the problem. Do we all want to live like we are in a prison? I mean thats what will happen effectively. We all grew up without this kind of heavy handed bs. Inflicting this on the younger generation is not something we should do if we can help it. There are other options although there are some people who will get butt hurt if you bring them up as an option.

Public events have a heavy police presence. Not for the reasons you are talking about. But they are there.
