Unknown electric connection on steering column

On my 55 Century there is an electrical connection on the steering column under the dash, about half way down the column. The wire coming out of it has been cut. I have checked every manual that I have or can find, but have been unable to find where this wire is supposed to go or what it is supposed to do. The connection protrudes out from the steering columnand has a white wire. Does anyone know what this wire connects to? Buckeye

Thank you for the reply. The horn does not work with the factory horn ring. It has been set up with a seperate button. I will check and see if that connection works. Buckeye

Chances are it won't...probably why changed to button. You'll probably have to pull wheel and check contact and ring for corrosion/breakage...

Yep, chances are it won't.......or it will blow all the time. First remove the plate that holds the brush connector to the column and look in the hole to check the condition of the brass sleeve and soldered wire on the steering shaft. The horn uses a grounding circuit to trip the relay for the horn. That brass sleeve should be intact and have a wiping pattern around it from the brush contact. The brass sleeve is insulated from the steering shaft with a rubber sleeve underneath it. The sleeve commonly cracks and splits into 1/4 inch pieces when it fails. The wire is run up the center of the steering shaft to the top where it terminates with a spring loaded cap to interface the horn ring components. The contact mechanism on top is adjustable for sensitivity of movement of the horn ring.
