Vac. pump install question

Thanks to earlier threads, I was able to find an electric vacuum pump (from a mid 80's 4 cylinder), which is said to be able to pull crankcase vacuum. (I push a little oil out the front seal at the dragstrip...)

Of course, the wiring colors don't match the instructions, due to GM's constant changes, but even with experimentation, all I can get is a pronounced "click" when I put power to the unit.

Anybody know how to make this work? Three wires; black, green, and blue with a white stripe.

    Thanks for any help!

You will find what your looking for at www.hardtail.com. Let me
know if it works. Thanks Kirk

    Thanks Kirk,

Turns out that's the exact article someone must've posted that led me to the pumps, and I used for tech info! Unfortunately, I've used my best interpretation of those wire combinations, with no results, other than the aformentioned "click", that sounds like a solenoid, but no pump ever kicks in. Do you know if this is how they act if the pump is broken?

You are probably right about the solenoid 'click'. I will try to explain this. To get the 'click' sound will only take two wires connected to 12+ and ground-. Try connecting the other wire to 12+ aswell to get the pump working.

I'm curious about this setup... I have read the article and have a question. If this electirc pump was suppoded to be a "Helper" for power braking systems in underpowered 4 cyl cars.... It may be able to pull 13-14 vac. on a booster, but will it be able to handle that for a larger area like the engine block (ie... will it pull enough volume to create a decent vac reading in the block):Do No:

I'd like to know your experience with it, if it works well I will also go this route. I can't justify $200 for a race pump. But the PCV system isn't cutting it.

    TIA

Thanks Royden, I did actually pair the Blue/white and green wires and apply power to them, and put the black to ground. (No luck, just click.) I also tried each wire individually to power, with no results. Various combinations resulted in no result, or just the click. Thinking that perhaps this little unit actually needed some amperage to power it, and that the click was akin to a starter solenoid click, I powered up the unit with a running vehicle with healthy components. Still no movement or airflow....

Perhaps the unit itself is not working, though the car I took it off of had no brake problems, so I've no reason to suspect that it's broken. At least these things are a dime a dozen in the junkyards. (Probably get what you pay for!!) I believe today I'll disassemble the little pump, and satisfy my curiosity!

The Mustang site also has good info on the Mark VIII fan installation that's mentioned frequently in this forum.
