What type of valve seal if any was used on exhaust valves on a 1972 455? The new parts (Fel pro) only list seals for the intake side. thanks for any assistance.:Dou:

No Valve seal was used from the factory on the exhaust guides/valves.

For a stock rebuild, as long as you have the guides taken care of, you can run it that way.

With any type of a performance cam, it's a good idea to machine the guides for seals. Your cam type, and the required valve spring will dictate what type of seal you machine for.

Thanks Jim for the info. that is what I suspected. After I removed the rocker shaft assembly and valve spring I found that someone had been into the 455 that I own and had used the same seals on the exhaust that was used in the intake. When I saw the taper on the exhaust valve below the retainer and locks I could not believe that would be of any use.

I was experiencing some exhaust smoke after an overnight start-up which is typical of a valve seal problem but we had some unusually cold temperatures here in Wv last month and engine started burning some oil under acceleration. I hope the new seal cure the problem.

I don't know if the valve seats in these heads have been changed I am using some lead additive as insurance.

Who manufactures a shorty header this engine?
