I am swapping the parts from a good 1967 a body switch pitch to a good 1970 400 B body transmission. I pulled the pump and the complete input shaft assembly. I also got the solenoid, and wire assembly. My issue is when iv go to put front pump assembly in, it acts as though the shaft inside second drum is different size, preventing first drum assembly from going in.
Am I doing something wrong or missing a step in the process.
I am adding the orifice to the tranny before final assembly.

Should be no problem, but you won't be able to do the installation with the transmission in its horizontal (in car) position. The whole input shaft/forward drum assembly has to engage the clutch pack fully. The transmission will have to be sitting on it's tail, otherwise the clutch pack will be out of alignment due to gravity and you won't be able to align for installation.

There is a difference in spline or diameter on the early intermediate shafts.

Can you post a pic of your case front. (specifically the bottom holes).

GM started casting the cases with the feed orifice blocked around 1970.
If the passage is there you will need a cup plug to block the hole then drill a .026 hole in the center of the cup plug.

You will want to use the 70's valve body as the switch pitch does not have the same shifting valve to permit a 3-2 downshift.
