Was A 65 GS/Skylark Equiped With Fender Mounted Mirrors?

Discussion in 'Buick FAQ' started by Joe65SkylarkGS, Feb 6, 2009.

Did the 65 Skylark or GS come with the side view mirrors mounted on the fenders?

There is a car for sale on ebay right now that has that, and my GS came with holes in the fender on the driver side with no sign of having holes on the door.

    Any info?

I have never seen a "Factory" fender mounted rear view mirror in all my 40 years of owning and parting the '64-65 Skylarks. They were all mounted on the door. Someone got lazy in their restoration.

Or it was restored by a GTO guy. I have not seen one on a fender. I have seen then toward the front of the door or more toward the vent window but I think that depends if it was a remote mirror or manual mirror.

Yes it's a freaking bargain. He is a board member.

Greg, my car was original when I got it and most of the original paint was faded off from being in colorada. It was like it was sand blasted or something. So there aren't any holes in the door or looks like there ever was. When I unwrap the car i'll post some pics.

    Joe,

I have seen weird things in my experiences with the '64-65 A Body cars so I have learned never to say something never came from the factory. A friend has a '64 Skylark convertible that was all original before he restored it. He is an aviation engineer for the FAA so he tends to be fanatical when it comes to the details. His side and rear trim had the centers painted flat black, not silver like every other car. He was very careful in removing it and he is convinced that it was factory so he redid it in flat black. It looks really sharp against the silver paint of the body.

I have also found strange things that body repair shops did back in the day. Is it possible that your car had a door skin replaced sometime back when they were available? I'd have to see an upclose picture of the mirror as well. If someone found a way to install a trishield mirror on the fender I don't think it would fit very well. If it is an aftermarket mirror then the question has been answered. Still I'm willing to keep an open mind tinged with slight skepticism. With the dozens of cars I have parted out over the years, you'd think I'd have seen at least one of them if it was factory.

I'm with you Greg. We all checked out the door and couldn't see any sign of holes. I will get a close up. Oh the fender came with holes but no mirror.

    The mystery continues!!

My 65 skylark has only one mirror on the driver side but its located right in line with vent ing glass. Joe seams to have knowledge on buicks,my question is on the color combo on my car. I have seen alot of buicks but no with these colors with halo top.

Worked at a Buick dealership in '65. NEVER saw factory fender mounted mirror(s) on any series. Did quite a few dealer installs...no fender template, just door. No customer requests for fender mounting either. Over the years, I've seen Buicks with fender-mounted mirrors, but they were generally aftermarket.

    Bullett,

I can't tell from your avitar and my old eyes, what colors you have on your '65. Typically what I have seen is the halo area painted the same color as the car, the halo area painted either white or black depending upon the color of the car, or a black or white vinyl insert, again depending upon the color of the car. I'm not saying they didn't do anything else, I've just never seen it nor have I seen any documentation of anything different.

Olyeller the 65 has deep green body and cream color halo insert. I will try to get all paint code # sometime this week and do my homework with some help with team of people on here.
