Water on floorboards after rain

Discussion in 'Color is everything!' started by Phil, May 9, 2009.

Phil It really *is* a 350...

I've found water pooling on the floorboards of my 72 Skylark after it rains. The side windows, door seals, windshield and rear window have been narrowed out. The only other thing I can imagine is the cowl area below the wipers. Aren't there supposed to be drain holes in there and if they fill up with water to a certain level will it spill in past the firewall bulkhead?

If I can narrow this down I can get on with the interior of the car but I don't want to touch anything until I get the leak addressed.

Any help on where to search for the leak is appreciated!!

My Wildcat was doing the same thing. On my car the water path from the cowl is....in the cowl area and then drains to the sides and down behind the kickpanels into the rocker panels then through the rocker panels under the door and then out two holes in front of the back tires. These two holes are in the body and face the driveshaft. If yours is like mine you can run your hand under there to find the holes. They are probably caked with dirt. I think they are about the size of a quarter.

I took off the kick panels and found the drain hole in the bottom to be clogged with dirt. Probably decaying leaves. What was happening was the water would drain down behind the kick panel and then back up where the hole was clogged and then spill over into the floor boards.

I took a hose and water blasted the dirt out. I did this without the carpet in. Eventually it opened up all the way to the two holes in front of the back tires. I was shocked at the volume of crap that washed out of there. Once the crap was blasted out I was obvious where the two holes were. Never had the problem again.

Pull the interior kick panels either they are filled with junk or the seal is shot allowing the inflow of water. If you got a rust bucket the top of cowl is rotted and allows the water to drain into the interior you need to check this after a car wash or heavy down pour..Look way up in the dash towards windscreen water will drip all over the wiring components etc...

I bet your front windshield is leaking. Right down low at the corners is where it usually leaks.

I had trouble with 87 limited when relatively new. Seam sealer was missing at two welded panels by the wiper motor where fenders attach to body. Had to remove front clip to fix. Ten seconds at the factory cost quite a lot at the dealer for warranty work.
