Does anyone now what the approximate weight of a 455 shortblock is? Also, how about a TH-400 transmission (empty of fluid, without the torque converter).

    Thanks,
    Brett

    approximately

Im expecting someone will come along with a more accurate answer, but if you are shipping it truck freight the following should do. Im guessing the short block should be roughly 450 and the tranny around 125. I know when I had my 455 (2 pallets consisting of a full long block, accessories & a SP400) shipped to me from CA it was upwards of 900 lbs.
I assume thats what you are asking for..... May I suggest FedEx Freight? :Brow: If thats the case request the JOM40 discount ("Just One More").

Basically, I'm trying to figure out if my ford Ranger can handle, a shortblock, a tranny, me (200 lbs), and my wife (100 lbs), plus probabaly 125 lbs of misc items.

The truck is rated at 1250 lbs minus passengers.

    So if your numbers are right: 1250(truck capacity)-200 (me)-100 (wife)-450 (shortblock)-125 (tranny)-125 misc=250 lbs of spare capacity.

    I should be alright.

I'd say the shortblock weighs closer to 400lbs maybe a little under. I can move them around fairly well, can't pick it up though. The tranny probably weighs between 125 and 175. I can pick these up reasonably well.

Depending on how far you have to go I wouldn't worry too much about your weight, you said you 250 shy anyway. I've had up to 2200 lbs in my F-150 (and will never do it again). Just make sure you have all that stuff tied down. I bent my tailgate when a tranny slammed into it after moderate acceleration.

    Youre fine

So far every time Ive heard questions about motor weight someone is getting ready to ship one.
As far as the turck goes you probably have alot more to spare than you think. I dont remember the exact capacity numbers, but I always suspected and a car show finally came out and verified--- today's pickups are vastly under rated. I think the 1/4 ton, 1/2, etc is just for easy classification, but they actually hold considerably more than what they are classed under. Im guessing its just not for hardcore use or with ideal comfort in mind. I seem to remember it being that radio talk show with two brothers that said they were typically good for ALOT more (double what they were rated, maybe??) than publicly rated. I know I had a 1/2 ton Chevy ('97 Z71) and it brought hom 4700 lbs of sand in one load..... VERY hard on the springs, but it was only for a few miles. Ive heard multiple other stories very similar payloads. You will be FINE unless you have other serious mechanical problems.
