This Craftsman mower with a Honda engine is the best darn mower! It is wonderful to buy something of such quality these days. I used it all summer and it performed flawlessly. Sorry you Briggs guys, this thing rocks!

Speaking of buying rice, we just bought a '04 WRX STi. What a fun (and fast) car to drive. I dosen't have a type R sticker, but it does have the big wing. I hate to admit, but some rice is good.

That Craftsman is a cheap copy of the real thing. I'll stick to the authentic Ricemower. I like the rear bagger. When I'm done mowing I unhook the bag, fold the handle into the trunk, and drive to the store for refreshment.:bglasses:

  7. I bought our 22" MTD push mower 10 yrs ago, with 4.5 Briggs or maybe it's a Tecumseh, I'll have to look:Dou: . Anyway, it starts every time with 2 pumps on the primer and 1 pull. I still have not had to replace the original spark plug either.

When I was a kid we got a new mower. When I bought my own place Dad got a new mower and said take that one with you. I used the same 3HP Briggs & Stratton for 26 years. It would start every spring on the second pull. I replaced wheels, handles, pull cords, finally the deck started rotting out so I retired it. I picked up a 10ish year old used 22" cut 4HP B.S. powered front drive walk behind for cheap. I liked the mower but the motor sucked. It would not rev and would bog down faster than the 3HP. I rebuilt the carb put in a new plug etc. still sucked. 4HP = POS.

Well two summers and it died. On a lark looking at the old 3HP that I still had not gotten rid of sitting behind my shed. I thought, I wonder if it will start & if it will fit my other deck. Sure enough, so I used it another three years until the muffler rotted off. It was smoking and needed to be retired. Mind you I only ever changed oil on this thing about twice since new and it was built to run on leaded gas. I think of it and really old restored farm tractors that quietly & smoothly pure when someone says they don't build them like they used to.

Last summer I picked up a used 4HP Honda walk behind for cheap. It pulls eazy starts eazy runs smooth and has a light aluminum deck. But it has no torque and will only rev if you hold the throttle up near the choke setting. The rear drive is not as user friendly for mowing either. This summer I will look for a new front drive I&C Briggs & Straton powered mower.

Dick. That is too funny man!

I hadn't thought about it but the thing is very low to the ground and does suck. I guess some rice is nice!:beer

What about the diamond plated Kubotas?

Well, they may not be diamond plated, but they are priced like they are. Good powerful motors though....great for going through thick Zoysia(sp?)

Bought one of the little Honda mowers about 3.5 years ago from Home Despot. It is easily the BEST mower I've ever used in EVERY aspect. One easy pull starting every time. I'd buy one again if I ever have to and recommend them to anyone I know looking.

My mother in law (sigh) stuck to her buy american guns and bought one of the nicer MTD's with the big 6.5 horse Briggs. Lots of power but you have to PULL it to get it started (1 PULL does it though) and it feels like it weighs as much as 2 of my Hondas.

Something I noticed in my younger days (when I mowed grass for gas money) was that the front drivers were a bit nicer to manuver BUT the weight of that drive system out on the end of the deck pretty much offsets the advantage in manuverability (IMHO) .

Besides even though it's only rated at 5.5 HP I think my Honda could thrash wheat as long as the mulch (quadra-cut) blade isn't on it.

    regards

    It's all personal preference.

Myself, I think rear drive mowers manuver more easily. With a front drive, when you go to turn around, and you lift the front end you lose all assist.
I'll stick with a rear drive Snapper.
It's a tank of a mower as far as weight goes, but it picks up leaves and grass like a freaking vacuum cleaner.
My neighbor has a Honda mower. It is a nice machine, very quiet.
    The worse small engine made....
The 3hp Clinton that came on the go-kart I bought as a kid.
Replaced that turd with an Industrial use Techumseh.

Hot, properly cooked rice is good. Burnt, poorly made rice is bad.

Ricers are cool to look at with the right paint job and design. But the thing is, these days, the rice boys just get pipes that make a well brewed flagalent sound like a gentle breeze and a wing big enough to make a 747 jealous. A lot of these guys are out just talking big and making a lot of noise. My motto is "Don't take the poise if you can't back the noise." If i had just enough money to either get a good set of headers, or a cam, i would go with the cam. I would rather sound like crap and run 12's than sound like thunder and run 14s.

    BadBrad Got 4-speed?

Similar to David, I've got a 12 yr old 22 " Craftsman with a 4.5 Tecumseh. Original spark plug, spare tire, and protecto-plate  . Two pumps and 1 pull. I think I've changed the oil twice - bad Brad...bad Brad!!

Big disapointment now is the Permanex grass catcher (plastic box) is real tired. I only need to replace two pieces of that catcher. Sears wants $140 for a couple pieces of plastic they manufactured 12 years ago. That's almost as bad as a coolant recovery bottle! Sears is on drugs! Duct tape is a lot cheaper!
