What Air Filter?

Discussion in 'Street/strip 400/430/455' started by jamyers, Oct 27, 2003.

    What's the 'best' air filter for a stock-looking 455?

I've currently got the filter base and lid from an 80's Olds Diesel, holds a Fram 3492 Filte, which is HUGE, and to the nitwits at the inspection station, looks stock, especially with the "keep your GM car all GM with GM parts" sticker.

Is there anything that flows more air, or how about the K&N filters (although pricey)?

K&N is my choice of air filter....

I am still in the deciding stage of wheter I can justify paying $40 for a K&N, but I need one in order to use this:

The stock filter doesn't seem to fit under this lid.

That's a lid? filtering air from above also, yoiks!

    What diameter is it?

Also, I seem to remember you mentioning a Q-jet rebuilder / tuner sometime past, and I'm not smart enough to search for the right words to find any on this board. Know of any? My Q-jet has a slight hesitation / stumble going to full or mostly-full throttle, and I've tried all the normal things, like the air valve spring, etc. It's got me really stumped. :blast: Everything else works great, I can ease into wot no problem, just can't hammer it from a stop.

The lid is a 14"....but doesn't seem to fit quite right with the stock deutsch filter. Ugh, time to spend the money and make my car breathe better.

Check to see what secondary rods you have....they may be too lean. You want the thinnest possible rods you can get.

IMO, just stick with plain paper. Change often, and use a 14x4" if you can.

I thought this was smoke and mirrors but, I will pass it on any way. I saw a demo of an Amsoil filter against a K&N and a paper element that made the Amsoil look the best. Of course this was by an Amsoil dealer. They had a large plenum chamber set up with a suction system that had a flowmeter and vacuum guage to read pressure and show flow. They demoed all 3 elements and of course theirs was the best by quite a bit. This demo took place at the Frakenmuth car show this year. Before I get flamed, let me say I did not buy the Amsoil element and am not pushing their product. Just passing on what I saw. Mike D.
