When you are talking about a 40 year old car, no one knows what has been changed unless you are the original owner. It isn't that difficult to pop the sleeve out and count the teeth on the DRIVE gear. You just need to get the rear wheels off the ground with the transmission in neutral. You know what they say about the word "assume" Assumption is the mother of all screw ups.

Quite true Larry, neither the motor or Trans is original to the car.
As I mentioned above, the leak has not dripped, so I cant see me pulling this out again soon.. Ive almost gone broke on buying transmission fluid in the past few months.

At some point after the BOP show in OCT, I will pull it again with the rear end off the ground and count to be sure.. I only want to do it once.

But Ive learned a lot in this thread, and it will be my reference for sure
    thanks to all! :TU:

I have a brand new Grey 44 tooth gear if you need it. Bought the wrong one from PATC last month. They charged me $11.00 for the gear and $8.00 shipping and handling. Was gonna send it back but I know how hard they are to find.

    google "speedometer calibration patc"
(They won't let me post links yet :( )
I have bought from these guys, while not cheap, they usually have had what I needed, there is a calculator for drive/driven gears there also.

Here you go Curtis, read all about it.. scroll down to the TH-400 section, and all the available driven and drive gears are shown.

Try to get a 15 tooth plastic gear, that will just slip right on that ouput shaft (just a little clip retains it) that way you can go with the very common 36-39 tooth housing you already have. With a 15 tooth gear and your tire size, a 38 tooth driven would be just right.

I am not sure if they make a plastic gear in 15 teeth or not, as I use only the steel 15 tooth drive gear in my trans builds, but I seem to recall they do.

That's a very late speedo housing you have, they didn't start using plastic ones until the late 80's, more than likely it's a service replacement part.

As was stated, don't worry about what the factory manual says, as that trans has been changed, the plastic drive gear came about in the mid 70's, all the early transmissions had metal drive gears.
