If I had a Saturn Yellow GSX and I stripped off the original paint what colors would the substrate be?

Don't know about the body, but the back of the headlight bezels have been a black primer of some sort in my experience.

Thanks Dean. That is the only thing I remember from my GSX restos.I guess because that black seemed like the primer on service replacement sheetmetal.

I believe the "before" pictures of James Weinman's Saturn Yellow GSX showed the primer color and it was gray. Maybe he can get on here and post the answer.

I don't know the answer, but here is a pic of my car the day I bought it 3 years ago. It had some spot painting done at some point as you can see by the Red oxide primer on the door, and the Grey primer on the quarter.

As far as the headlight bezels being black on the backside, I think they were primered when manufactured and not when the car was built. They were assigned a different part number than the chromed ones, but the casting numbers are the same as the chromed ones for all 1970 Skylarks and Gran Sports. The GSX NOS bezels that were sold over the counter were primered, and I was told by one Buick restorer that he currently has one that is Black primer, and one that is Grey primer. :Do No:
