While I agree owners should do their homework, why are people judging cars if their knowledge of said cars isn't up to speed?

Clearly it's a thankless job but...

They have always been un-paid volunteers since I made up the judging rules for the club.

It is a completely thankless job and if you sign on to do it, it basically takes up most of the day. So while everyone is enjoying themselves you end up working the entire day while you are on your “vacation”.

Many times, finding people that will judge is a very difficult task.

    BUQUICK I'm your huckleberry.

Of course it is difficult to find people to judge and one of the biggest reasons was summed up by Duane: "It is a completely thankless job and if you sign on to do it, it basically takes up most of the day. So while everyone is enjoying themselves you end up working the entire day while you are on your “vacation”."

Try explaining a California emissions 70 GSX to a judge. They say but I thought all GSX were built in Flint? Well yes they were but it had to be built with emission equipment for sale in California. But that stuff wasn’t used until 71? How about that charcoal can with the three ports and the middle one blocked with a rubber cap? That can’t be correct? Well yes it is correct and so is the rubber cap. Would you like to see the assembly manual complete with part number also engraved into the top of plastic can? I always try and be ready.

Not saying I'm particularly qualified (esp. wrt to anything but '70-71), but I think it'd be interesting to judge concours one year. There were an unusual # of cars in the class this year as well so while in no way defending the deductions & apparent knowledge gap, I suspect they were a bit overwhelmed.

I ask this only because I'm getting ready to embark on a project that I'd like to enter in concours & one that judges may not be as familiar with at least one major aspect of: While one's car is being judged, is the owner informed of deductions &/or allowed to question the judges with respect to deductions or show them relevant documentation?

I'm sure most of us would be respectful & may even know the judges personally, but as volunteers working on their vacation, I'm sure the judges don't want to get into a pissing match w/a car owner.

It was my understanding as a participant we are not to talk to the judges. I have never been asked any questions past will you please open the doors. (5 concours events)

I was actually the first to respond to this question late last night. I wrote a long deal, said the cap was right, explained about the serrated, repro, etc. I then wrote about judging, being judged, etc. I posted it, then I pulled it down within minutes of posting it, mainly because I didn't want to see this thread go like this. Most of what people have said, I agree with. It doesn't matter if your car was professionally restored, you have to check it yourself. I've been docked for correct things before, too. This is actually the reason I know longer have my car(s) shipped to big shows. Honestly, these cars are way, way over-restored. There's no grievance process for some big shows. Ironically, last night when I was writing, I thought of Brad's cars and how he shouldn't be stirring the pot. lol
