What is the correct wheel code for the 1971 Buick GS 15x7 road wheel? Is it the WP or the VJ or is it something totally different? Was told that the WP is the wrong wheel for the 71 Gran Sport.

So by that it is WP or VJ if it's the 15 X 7.

    If it's 14 X 6 it's WJ.

The WP is the better one as it has the JJ bead that is a wider bead.

You could also use the WG, it's the same just 1970 and has the good JJ bead.

Car has the WP code 15x7 wheels on it and one is bad. I have been looking for a wheel and talked to a Buick guy at a swapmeet over the weekend and he said I am looking for the wrong wheel WP is for 1973 and up. I know where a set of the VJ code wheels are at and they look the same but I am clueless to these codes on Buick wheels. My 1970 SS Chevelle as the same wheel as a 69 but the code's are different between the 2 years but same wheel. Just would like to know what is right and what is wrong that way I keep the car original.

I would tend to trust what Duane said. WG is the correct code.

Well you have the right ones than, look for another WP rim and you will be all set. What's your spare ??? If that one is good just swap them (and
the tires if you have a different tire as the spare).

Look on eBay, I just bought a real good rim a month or so ago for a good price to use for my spare (I have 15's and the spare was a 14").

Well he was close, by the chart the WP's are from 1971 through 1987 .

Well you could go with those, but they do not have the wider lip. For a street driver that should be no problem though.

Good luck, hope this helped :TU:

This is like the 3rd or 4th time I have seen people on this board refer back to an incorrect chart.

This is part of the mis-information I fight against everyday with our cars. It seems like once something is written people tend to think of it as GOSPEL.

    The true answer for Buick A-bodies is;
70 Either "7.0" or "WG" (depending on the date)
    71-72 "WM"
73-77 or so "WP" (can't remember the exact cut off year)

I sure wish this chart was not posted here.

Thank you Duane, this is the 1st I've heard that the chart is wrong, I will correct the one I have if I can.

Are you going to wright up a new chart ???

If not I'll try to when I have some free time (and I'll run it by you 1st to make sure it's OK  ).

OK there you go earnhardtgw3 by what Duane posted there you are looking for a "WM" rim for your 1971 GS if you want the correct one.

Seeing that you say you have "WP" rims you may want to buy just one "WP" rim and stay with that, that way you have the same rims all around unless you are going to buy 5 "WM" rims.

Good Luck, sorry I was missinformed before.

    David,
Sorry to spout off, every now and then some of my frustrations come out.

I did two articles for the BPG newsletter about 14" & 15" Optional wheels for the A-bodies. It listed everything for the Sport, Super Sport, Chevy Rallye Style, 14" Chrome, & 15" Chrome wheels. I checked hundreds of wheels by using date codes etc.

The chart for the 15" Chrome wheels may not be complete at the upper years but is real good for the lower ones. (I didn't have many late model wheels to choose from.)

I will see what program I used to create it and try to post the chart here.

I would not hesitate to use the WP rims even though not 100% correct they look the same that I can tell. Upside is they can be much newer than the WM and so have less wear. I have WP and I think some VJ around that I use. I Beleive they were used up until late 70's as I think the dates on mine may be from 1979. I gave up looking for nice WM's. Most are very beat.

No problem Duane, I didn't know I was quoting off of an incorrect chart and I'm the same way, if I'm giving someone advice about something I like to give a correct answer. If I gave a wrong answer as you saw I will addmit it and correct myself and try and find the correct info for the person.

So don't worry, I didn't think you were yelling at me :) :Brow: :) .

Hopefully you can find the program and update it, that one you did is very helpfull and I like the one you did on the JJ wheel also.

    See Ya

    OK,
I finally figured out how to cut it out of the article and post it here. It only goes up to the 1977 model year.

I concur. When I saw this chart made into a sticky, the hair on the back of my neck stood on end. There is a great deal of erroneus information on it.
