While installing new cables for my rear speakers I lurked under the back seat bench to find this. I was hoping for a build sheet of my 1971 GS, but these handwritten papers were all I found. Can someone tell me what this is? Jens
Its a workers notes, probably from the fisher assembly, does not mean much looks like its for two different cars and may not even be for your car - just garbage someone thru in as they were working. 444= SKYLARK CUSTOM SERIES 137 = Tan Bucket Seat Interior 166= Bucket seats saddle 31-46 I dont know they rae written like could be lower and upper body colors but the numbers are not Buick colors U80 = rear speaker single M38 (TH350) transmission. B22= door panel emblem - 5?? i can't read on picture 437-Two-Door Sport Coupe B52 = Custom rear padded cushion B22= door panel emblem 35-55 dont know they rae written like could be lower and upper body colors but the numbers are not Buick colors (except 55 (roof) upper body cortez gold ? cant read the rest in the picture
391 does not equate to any Buick code i can find - could be the last three digits of the Body serial - may want to check that against your body tag. XXXXXX BDY
Number two fits my car, it`s originally a cortez gold car with white vinyl top, saddle interior with bucket seats. It was sold over here as a standard GS, but has a special GM Swiss-plate that shows it was pre-assembled as a 455 in Flint(Cars were deliverd over here with drivetrain and engines in crates, my theory is somebody wanted a 350 instead of a 455, then the 455 car was finally assembled in the GM plant at Biel/Switzerland with a 350/350 instead of the original 455/400). Thanks for decoding Jens
if these / numbers are for your car, it may not be a GS from the factory GS numbers would be 43437 , Skylark Custom 44437, I can see 437 on both (thought it was 137 before) and 444 on one. hard to read numbers ahead of 437 which only means these break down as follows 4= Buick 4= GS Gran sport series 3= Skylark series 437= 2 door sport coupe. if you take VIN numbers from the engine/trans and VIN you will know if that was at the assembly plant - The GM Swiss-plate would some I and i think others would like to see. Do you have its protect o plate - below is guide to decode further, color code/trim charts and chips info can be found at http://boattail-riviera-by-buick.com/71/COLORS TRIMS/index_gallery.php Documentation ,matching info - i would like to have your swiss-plate any other info have for swiss assembly info for inclusion in update which will have codes/charts for all models as soon I get more info This version is written for Riviera much applies to other models . </pre> <center> </center> Documentation Decoding and Vehicle Matching Guide <center> </center> Boattail Option Lists - Windows Stickers + Various Buick Order forms w/prices </pre>
391 = the plant's body shell number assigned If you look closely you may infer that it reads "D 35-55." If so, consider whether this is short hand for: D35 = Sport mirrors D55 = Long center console How does this interpretation compare with how this particular car is equipped?
Good archealogical work - or at least logical - I didn't the D buti think you may right on that. looks like two mirrors in the thumb but cant tell if they sport, they seem chrome. Do you have complete Buick RPO codes - i only have Riv options ones, and sales codes for 71-73 a full list would a great additon to update to decode guide I'm trying to gather info for. Note: for those trying to figure out this stuff -I found most the information above by just searching the forum for each item I could read on the sheet.
Number found on the cowl tag, the GM Suisse tag and the owner plate indicate all the same number ending 4559, and beginning 43437. This is not the number found on the papers under the seats. The last two pics are called "Typenscheine", type sheets, giving all the different types of one model an own number, thus sperating the 350 from the 455. It can be seen on the GM plate in the upper right and does not correspond with the ending 18 my car has in is current papers, but ending 20 which correspends to the 455 (0330 20) rather than the 350 (033018). I think that`s why they still had the car named a "GS 350" on the owners plate. And yes, it has sport mirrors... Jens
very interesting paper and tag - may i use these pictures in update of Documentation Decoding and Vehicle Matching Guide A detailed engish translation of the Typenscheine", type sheets to go page below picture would be very nice to put in also if could do that. the motor PS on your Swiss tag, swiss being like french would this equate to PS if translated to English if so would indicate 1970 <table align="middle" border="0" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" width="250"><tbody><tr bgcolor="#808080"><td>V-8 350</td><td>4bbl</td><td>SP</td></tr></tbody></table> what is stamped on engine ??? - the north american protect o plate would this code and build date code - your does have that info.. This info confirms those papers are not for your car as they 444 for skylark custom and that what you have is GS 350 GS SERIES Model 43437-Two-Door Sport Coupe...............................8,268</pre>
The 166 trim code on the trim tag matches the 166 on the hand written sheet. This car came with saddle bucket seats not white. Sometime in the last 40 years someone changed them.
I actaully meant to say this car was a black top car not white. B on the tag indicates black. White was A
Hi Dave, the car still has a black vinly top, maybe it`s the original one then(I semi-professionaly tried to decode it myself last year, and thought I decoded a white top...black is better, suits my taste a little better). The type sheets were/are still used by the gouvernment to identify a certain model of a car therefore switching to another "Typennummer" is very complicated and almost not possible. You may use them for decoding vehicle matching guide, I also have one for a 455 74`GS if you need it. And those you see have a second page. As far as I know they were provided by GM Suisse. The GM Suisse papers are actually in german, if I got time, you tell me what you need, and I`ll see if I can arrage a translation for your purposes. But what`s really interesting for me is that the beforementioned number 0330 20 is on both the GM Swiss tag and the "Typenschein" for the 455....that does indicate for me it was originally a 45 car, otherwise it would spot a 0330 18 for a 350 car. Jens
Jens, I agree with the black top being better. Easier to keep clean. Your car also shows another Flint built car with a bare aluminum trim tag.
Mothers keeps it black for now, works really great, a member told me about it. How come the number in the car on all 3 plates shows a typical GS number while one of the seat sheets doesn`t ? The other one says 3437. Maybe these seats where originally meant for another car? All interior is saddle, so I don`t think somebody over here loaded himself with all the work remodelling it in the last 40 years. Jens
the motor PS on your Swiss tag, swiss being like french would this equate to PS if translated to English if so would indicate 1970 <table align="middle" border="0" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" width="250"><tbody><tr bgcolor="#808080"><td>V-8 350</td><td>4bbl</td><td>SP</td></tr></tbody></table> </pre> The "PS" code is correct. In the '71 Field Manual "PS" = "TD" = 1971 GS 350-4bbl (Page 32) "SL" (manual) & "SM" (automatic) = "TS" = 1971 455 Stg 1 (page 30) :TU: David
