I have a 73' Regal with factory 455. I am rebuilding the motor and have found several suspicious questions, on what actually the motor is, or better yet from what year.
There are no outer head markings. Exp: 73 on the heads. Under the valve covers on the heads they read:

    1237661
    5
    GM
    E 22

    1 37661
    2

    GM
    F9

    Block reads
    455
    123899

1973 Buicks have the engine listed in the VIN, so post your VIN :TU:

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

Appears the heads are '71 Block number, can not find info.

I concur with Korrie on the 71. The reason Korrie cannot find the block number is I believe you miscopied and/or left out one of the last 4 digits.

    U = 455 with dual exhaust, but not a Stage I option.

I can't really place that number 1238981.... :Do No:

Look for engine code XF on the block.

Double check your block number....1238861 is a '71 block

Betting it's a '71 cause of the heads.

what is it with those pages of yours only going to 75? is that the most recent year in the book or do they just not think buick made a big block in 76? :error:

I also think so, "Opa" :TU:

    But since the Stig wrote:

By those words it sounds like he's telling the car still has the original engine....

    Bob,

Looking at the title, it's even amazing that 1975 is mentioned..... :bglasses:

I think he said it has 73 on the outside of the heads. I assume over one of the exhaust ports in big numbers, if it does I thought that meant the year? Tom

    I'd say it is a ....

Very late 71 model year 455, made in the summer of 71. :TU: They did not cast the year on the heads, I.D.'d by the casting number only. Most likely what you are looking at are cavity numbers there Tom. :bglasses:

I had a 72 engine out of a full size car and also a 73 and the 72 had "72" above the exhaust port and the 73 had a "73" so I assumed it was the year. My 70 heads don't have any numbers at all. I have a 76 motor in the garage but never looked to see if any numbers on these heads. I must have misunderstood the first post in this tread. I thought he said no numbers on the outside of head eccept for a 73. My mistake, learn something new every day lol. Tom
